What is it about Drizzt that you just can't stand?

It is not Drizzt that I can't stand, it is that EVERY FREAKIN D&D MUNCHKIN CREATES A DROW CHARACTER THAT IS A DRIZZT CLONE.

Drizzt was a fictional character that was used as a plot element in a few books, he was not much of one either. Come on, dark outcast, kick butt fighter, that was it, no depth, no personality, no soul.

It just gets to me how Drizzt became as popular as he did. I guess mass marketing did it but people have no taste and don't read other fantasy books to know what a good character is.

Karl Edward Wagner's Kane kicks Drizzt's butt and would make him his bitch! But then so many other great fantasy characters do the same!

Bah. The Star Destroyer would win, with Elminster coming a distant second.

The thing that annoys me most about Drizzt was how he destroyed the Ranger class. Where else did the two weapon fighting come from?

He always wins.

Annoying.

Gee, and this is so unique among heroes.

Do you hate James Bond, too?

Anyways, for me it's the wannabe's. I find the Drizzt trilogy a fine read and some of the better game-based fiction I have read (normally I find game-based fiction drek.) What killed Drizzt for me is all the emulators and fanboys. It's just sickening.

What I liked about Drizzt: In the Dark Elf Trilogy he served the reader as a fixture to look into Drow society. As the eyes and ears of the reader Drizzt showed us a glimpse of the Undrdark that had an incredible amount of depth.

What I don't like about Drizzt: When you take him away from the Underdark he suffers from Alien BMF Who suffers Alot Syndrome. It seems Salvatore has issues with giving up his protagonists.

What I don't understand: The lack of effect that Drizzt's upbringing has had on his mannerisms. Despite the goodness which oozes out of him I see not the slightest hint of an individual who grew up in a malevelent society.

Why I don't blame him for turning Rangers into Two-Weapon fighters: That precedence was set long before Salvatore or D&D came on the scene with Strider.

I usually make the disticntion between Drizzt the fictional character and Drizzt the FRCS NPC. I don't give two hoots about the NPC, you can ignore him or tweak his stats or whatever. As far as the character from the books go, a couple things bug me about him:

1) Why did rebel against the ways of the Drow? Answer; it was "in his blood" from his father. He never even met his father until he was an adolescent and already was rebellious against the drow traditions so it wasn't that he was raised that way. He was just born with this morality. I hate that kind of sloppy narrative. The idea that this sort of neo-Arthurian "Goodness" is innate and his spirit couldn't be broken.

Horse-puckey. ANYONE can be broken. A society that has existed for centuries based on that kind of cruelty would've broken him or killed him long before he escaped.

2) His talent was innate too. Sure, it's fine to have some talent for things, but the scene where his father tosses coins at him and he catches them all made me gag. Show me a hero who wants to be a master swordsman and practices until his fingers bleed, who becomes godlike in melee because he's dedicated his existence to the blade. Give that character a modicum of starting talent and make him go from there. But Drizzit was freaking James Bond: he's good at EVERYTHING.

3) Gwenyfvar. Ye flipping gawds! Soul-mate Astral Cat? Bleah! I suppose, to be fair, that isn't technically Drizzit, but MAN it was annoying!

Do I have a point? Probably not. Those are just my opinions, as per request.

(Yeah, yeah, ECL, whatever. How many DMs force their Drow characters to use that?)

Uh...this DM for damn sure does inforce that ECL +2. That spell resistance can be a real pain in the arse for a DM at higher levels! :)

" So, when I see Drizzt, I basically see him as RAS's twink character and all the stories about him as basically RAS being paid to ego masturbate."

Its for that very same reason that I lost interest in the Wheel of Time series. When you take a good look at Rand Al'Thor (Or whatever that characters name is) you cannot quite shake the impression that it is a reflection of the Authors teenage fantasies.

You have a young male protagonist with access to a great power. This same protagonist has become an outcast because of what that power is associated with. On top of that, you have the three of the five primary female characters aggessively pursuing him. And you get the feeling that they would be willing to share!

Angst is one thing. Angst plus 3 women hot for you is quite another.
