What is my alignment?

I am a good cleric that kills anything I see as evil using detect alignment spells.

Would that be evil? Chaotic?

That is not neutral nor lawful to kill anything that detects evil, yes you are quite chaotic, and so is your PC :p

I don't know. It depends on how you define good and evil in your campaign. No matter what all the different ENWorld yahoos will try to tell you, only the DM of your particular campaign (who has defined the morals of his/her world) can give the actual answer.

Now, here's my (yahoo) response:

Kill *anything* evil? Always? Without question? In my campaign, that character would likely end up being chaotic evil.

It could be lawful if he's a fanatic. I could see a LG religious fanatic seeking to smite all evil regardless of its form.

I agree which is why I stated chaotic, now the question of good vs evil is a whole other ball of wax.

I can't see anyone lawful killing all evil. I mean we are all evil at times, how would he function in a city, town etc... "I was wondering how much that--oh you stole money once *swish* Now no more evil store owner!"
You would be hunted good or evil.

I would say its Chaotic if you only used detect spells. If you had some evidence that the person was evil, I'd say that was lawful. Trying to bring an evildoer to justice type of an idea.

I was thinking of a paladin I played who was crazier than Beowulf in John Gardner's Grendel. According to his god any actions he took in the pursuit of LG were justified as they served the god. He would give evil folk he bumped into one chance to repent and go join a good church, but if they didn't he hunted them down and made them repent for their sins with their life.

All depends on your definitions of good and evil, but I have seen LG celestials act in this uncompromising, intolerant manner before. Why not mortals, too?

Well if the world you're playing in has laws then I'm sure those laws prohibit flagrant murder thereby making you chaotic. The lawful thing to do is bring them to justice. You don't kill the store owner but find out why he is detecting as evil, then you can take an appriate course of action based on why he is evil.

Killing evil is not lawful because murder is not lawful.

Killing all evil is not good because then evil gets no chance for repentance and therefor no chance to join the good and be a champion for the right side.

Of course I'm not your DM and therefor I will not be the one making this call, but I would say that you were chaotic neutral.

Killing Evil cannot be evil because you are vanquishing evil.

Unquestioningly (I know that's not a word) killing evil is not good because you have given no chance for repentance.
