What is the best save?

Just a curiousity, considering
1) Which saves (fort, reflex, or will) come up the most often in an adventure normally and
2) What are the effects for each type of save if you fail (fort-sometimes death, reflex-often half, will-domination, etc)

Which of the three would you consider the most "important" or valuable saving throw?

Most common seems to be reflex, but most important I think is will. Will saves seem to mostly be the ones that are very important.

I think Reflex is the most common saving throw, but failing a single Refl saving throw alone is never going to be deadly.

Failing a Will save is almost always very bad in the short term, but you often can be easily fixed (Sleep, Hold Person, Slow, Charm Person, Domination, Confusion, Feeblemind, Fear).

Failed Fort saves are pretty debilitating at low level (poison, Ghoul paralysis). If you fail one at high level, you are as good as dead. (Polymorph Other, Slay Living, Disintegrate, Horrid Wilting, Implosion).

I would say that nasty Will saves are more common at low to middle levels than those really bad Fort save effects. Overall I would give a slight edge to Will because of the greater frequency.

I would definitely go with Fort at high levels.

Reflex is further weakened by the reletively easy acess to evasion and the existance of improved evasion.

Will saves are harder to raise than the other two beucase unless you are a cleric you are not going to have a high wis, but con iand dex are far more universally important stats that popele usually make higher.

For thoes with high HP the weaker of fort / will will be the most important to improve. For low HP reflex saves are common and often very significant (Most reflex saves deal HP damage), though since low HP types tend to wear light or no armor a few levels of rogue or monk can help a lot. (though really if your reflex save is weak then evasion won't do much for you)

Also don't forget your sterotypes. People target their attacks based on what kind of saves you look like you'll have. Wizards and Rogues generaly get nailed with fort save effects, fighter types will saves and clerics reflex. So improving your 'appearant' weakness could be smart if your DM dosn't metagame too much, since you'll most likely deal with that the most. (Monks, on the other hand, get to deal with evard's black tenticles)

As far as which one is most important to make.... which do I have to roll right now?

I would have to agree. Then again, I'm playing a Cleric in CotSQ right now, and last game we fought a baddie that gives a ref save or a negative level. No Fort save.

GRRR...

Dextrous will and fort only work once per round, AFAIK

Did I say otherwise? I didn't say you should neglect the others. But if one has to make multiple will and fort saves in a round, you're bound to roll a 1, and you're bound to have many players fail the fort and will saves. But the topic is "What is the best save" and if the rogue had the right feats, it would become reflex.

EDIT: Wow I just read that, I don't mean that in a harsh tone, sorry if one reads it that way. :o
