Hmm...since I work with every one of these tools on a weekly basis, I think I can safely say that there is no 'best tool'. HOWEVER, the most versatile tool to have which can be used for the most things is a framing hammer, the best of which is the brand name Death Stick. No kidding here, there's actually a corporation that Manufactures these things.

These things are fun to use, especially when the homeowner is around.
The true handyman needs only two tools: WD40 to make things go, and duct tape to make them stop. An exceptional handyman can make a reasonable substitute for WD40 out of duct tape (or at least, I'm assuming they can, because WD40 is an element of the Everything set, and we all know you can make everything out of duct tape if you try hard enough).
