Also, I've never seen a lot of those on EN World's boards, so they don't really serve quite the right purpose IMO...

Someone was, coincidentally, telling me yesterday that apparently BUMP is short for Bring Up My Post. Never realised that before.

I don't know, but that suspiciously sounds like a "created" acronym to me, to explain what it means.

I've heard people say that SOS in telegraphy means things like "save our skins" or "situation overly serious," when in actuality its just because the pattern of "three short and three long" is easy to repeat and distinguish.

Quite possibly, but it's not as obvious as some.

For instance, the pro- an anti-smoking organisations FOREST (Freedom Organisation for the Right to Enjoy Smoking Tobacco) and ASH (Action on Smoking and Health). It's so obvious that they came up with the acronyms first and then had to go through all sorts of contortions to make it fit!
