At least we didn’t label it ED for effective damage.

Still gotta play 'Guess the DM's plans' like all prep casters.
In my view, "guess the DM's short-term plans" is a lot easier than "guess the DM's long term plans".

I also think that trying to determine what's more complex, a) managing a large amount of character data OR b) making a long-term choice for the character, is a strongly personal determination. Because I absolutely know players who are good with the first aspect and struggle with the second, and vice versa.

Yea. I arrived at cleric too. Channel divinity is an additional option but it’s really simple. Cleric spells are mostly really simple.

I've seen a 13 year old completely new to D&D pilot a cleric reasonably well.

Preconstructed one from DoSI.

Any warlocks in the starter sets?

With bew players I normally ask for a concept and offer to build it for them. Example eg archer. They can rebuild it if they feel like.

One of them more or less figured it out and said something like "you nudge them".

I went with Wizard because of the evocation subclass. Pick some spells that go boom. Cast spells that go boom. Only the people you want to get hurt actually get hurt. Simple.

Also, we're 66 votes in and not one is for the Druid. At least we can agree on that.

Druids one of thise classes very easy to screw up. Seen one do exactly that. Hint play it as a controller. Player wanted to be melee because the race had a d6 racial ability abd natural armor.

Would run into combat deal somthing like 9 damage to a fire giant and use healing word once the Giant clocked him. At level 7.

He was having fun but everyone else wasn't so ended up pulling the plug.

i voted warlock, Agonizing Blast spam can take you a long way, far enough that you can probably leave your pact slots for casting something simpler out of combat, and yeah, some invocations can be complicated but there are some simple as bricks ones in there too.
