what is your favorite Final Fantasy game and why ?

There have been discussions of this over and over again in the "Computers, Software and D&D Utilities" forum. Just a heads-up.

FF8 and FFX-2 are in your favorites? Aren't you in the minority!

Mine is Final Fantasy 6. In my mind, no other FF game has reached the level of drama and emotional resonance found in that game. The first FF game I played was either FF4 or FF Mystic Quest (I can't recall, but I played them both around the sametime), and then FF6 a couple years later, so it wasn't my "first" FF game (common belief is that people tend to rank their first FF game as their favorite, but I disagree)

I also like FF9, even more than FF7, 8 or 10. Probably because it retains more of the "old school" feel than the other PS/PS2 releases.

I prefer FF4, FF5, FF6, FF7, and FF Tactics.

Never will I be able to choose my favorite among those five.

(FF8, 10, and X-2? Well, at least somebody out there likes those...)

Having said my piece about wrong forum...

I think it was FF3, the early ones were fun but it just got silly soon after that.

Same here on both counts.

II* (the first "real" FF to hit the US), III**, IX, and X. No angst-ridden main characters for me (not unless it's really, really graphically impressive, like X, anyway).

*I know it was actually IV, but the original II and III didn't make it to the US until remakes

For me, it was IV (in the US guise of II), and it was my first RPG game...I do believe the "imprint" theory. Quite simply, I'd never played a game that had such depth of emotion or such a detailed and compelling storyline. It left an indellible mark on me.

The music is worth special mention. "Pray" (I don't know if that's the official title; that theme that only plays during the intro, and again just before the final battle) is quite simply the single greatest FF song I've ever heard. Aeris's theme from FFVII is the only one that comes close.

Man alive I can't wait for the FFIV GBA release.

FF, FF 3/6, FF7 (the only reason I own a PS), and FFX (the only reason I own a PS2).

Edit - on an only slighty related note. I played a game way back on the SegaCD called Dark Wizard. It was fantastic. I have combed pawn shops looking for the game and the system, but with no luck. I have since found a ROM for it and an Emulator, but all I get to see is the intro (with no sound), and then it freezes up. *sigh* Someday.
