No single thing for all games. I come to different tables for different things.

I came here to post something similar. I play different games for different experiences. D&D is mostly about spending time with friends and joking around. I could never take a D&D game too seriously. HarnMaster, on the other hand. I'm still there for camaraderie, but the games tend to be deadly serious (and this is backed up by the rules). After the new year, I plan to dive into GURPS Horror, which will probably fall someplace in the middle.

I like the crunchy wargame bits and the role playing. I enjoy creating worlds, spinning up engaging plots, and acting out NPCs. I also really enjoy playing a character exploring a world and leaving their mark while building them mechanically.

I am curious about what draws people to the gaming table? For some it is roleplaying, other mechanics and for me it is being creative. Whether it is as the GM and story teller, or as a player and creating spells or tech. How about you? What is the draw for you?
Great prompt! Thank you!

I like exploring different realities from different perspectives. Seeing things through different eyes. Approaching situations from different ethical viewpoints.

Reading some of the player-facing material (species, classes, etc.) in order to come up with a character concept for your character during session zero and then trying to role-play as that character during the actual adventure itself. Playing with complete strangers at the TTRPG or the VTTRPG and then becoming their friends in RL as the adventure goes on. Coming up with a combat strategy whenever the DM throws one or more foes at you and your party.

It's the shared and personal experience.

Coming from a world of Video games and sports, TTRPGs is the only hobby that I know that is a completely flexible, open-canvas experience. It's kind of wild to know that a group of people can just sit together to declare/do pretty much whatever they want, and it'll be a mostly valid input for the game so long as it's described in such a way that it aligns with the rules. I cannot think of any other experience that allows for that except for Improv Theatre, which doesn't have the same vibe as a TTRPG.
