I definitely like the idea of giving characters quirks. To me, even heroes have flaws and strange eccentricities.

Ooh, here's some good ones I just thought of:

*Instead of a having a real job, claim to be an "adventurer" and insist that there's lots of treasure to be found in abandoned tombs and temples.

*Hang around with a group of three or four like-minded individuals, often for no good reason but to go kill things in aforementioned places.

*Purposely put your life, soul, and sanity in danger for a better magic sword.

Now that I think of it, I can see why they didn't put a quirks & flaws system into 3rd Edition . . . it's built right in!

Most people dont have a pronounced quirk... most people have a bunch of little well venered ones.

If everyone else is going to have a mental illness, be the fellow who wants to keep his disfunctional family together... at all costs.

Another would be to NEVER pass up a get rich quick scheme, its why your adventuring and what keeps you comming back. You would always be on the prowl for a new way to make a fast buck... you dont have to be stupid about it, just persuadable.

Cupulsive spender. Will spend d4*10% of any haul on high living within 1 week. This gold/gems is unavailible. However they get a +5 bonus on gather info checks in this period because they are buying drinks, etc.

A strange glowing green type of rock that is supposed to be rare but every villan has a chunk of it lying around. OK, maybe not.

Phobiophobia. Fear of fear.

Somniphobia. Fear of sleep.

Insomniphobia. Fear of lack of sleep.

Whew... I also thought it was my weaknesses... long list...

Claustrophobia can be neat... I had a character who was afraid of water higher than his waist... (BTW he found a water walking ring and prized it very very much !! ) Your DM has had a neat idea...

Phobia of snakes, spiders or orcs can be the case.

One "defect" we see a lot is being upper class and always spending more to get the best room... best food and clothes...

In my DMing experience, I've seen:
A druid with hayfever.
A rogue who's afraid of the dark.
A dwarf who refuses to bathe. (sadly, I've seen 2 of these from completely different players)
A swashbuckler with a debilitating fear of spiders.
A half-elf who is so embarassed by his elven side that he is excruciatingly rude to and distrustful of any elf that he encounters.
A sorceror from a barbarian tribe who does not know his own strength.
A rogue who is afraid of crowds. When he's in one he looks twitchier than usual because he's convinced that someone's following him.
