I never understood how "Nature = Summoning".

Summoning, in this sense, means bringing otherworldly animal-like creatures from another plane of existence onto our plane of existence for a brief time, to follow your orders and attack your foes.

HOW is that in any way natural or nature oriented?

It seems to the opposite to me - unnatural, alien, and not in tune with the world around you. It's a dissonant power.

That to me was always a mechanics problem. A druid in the wild, in my mind, would be more like tarzan... call out and the local friendly beasts would come to your aid. Problem is that they'd likely not arrive until combat is over.

Other. I don't like the druid and I don't think it needs to be a separate class in the D&D game. Nature priest = cleric. Elemental caster = wizard or warlock. Shapeshifter = monster.

This, except for the last part. I think a druid as a shifter would be the most non-overlapping.

Really, a nature priest can simply be a cleric. (Though it would certainly help to have a few nature-oriented powers to reinforce that theme.)

Druid's should have wildshape and environmental manipulation powers (like entangle, stoneshape, etc.). I'd prefer that they not be summoners or have animal companions, just because I hate both summoning spells and animal companions. (Though a dedicated Summoner class would be cool, if it summoned cool things and not... you know... dire badgers.)

Powerful ritualistic spells that are very potent, but are tied to a specific place / nexus of power. In his grove or a sacred stone circle, he's a solo foe on par with a dragon, in a town, he's a low level minion.
