D&D 5E What Level 20 Class Would Win?

Which Class Would Win?

sounds more like an arbitrarily imposed limitation to try to bring fairness.

imo. If something can be precast the day before - Especially the wish version then It’s baffles me why doing so would be arbitrarily punished.
Well, I don't know about "fairness", but to at least make it more interesting? ;)

I agree. I mean what wizard or sorcerer who could have a simulacrum via the spell or wish, wouldn't have one??? But it does make it a 2-1 fight basically, I don't think any class could stand up to that other than possibly another wizard/ sorcerer. Of course, a Dispel Magic would stop it LOL. :)

Sure, but by "prep" I just assume has all their normal prepared spells ready. Definitely not casting anything before the fight begins. Since feats are allowed (or at least not disallowed by the OP), I would think Wizard would probably also have Alert. And War Magic gives +5 INT to initiative... So I don't think the Monk winning Initiative is a guarantee.

Again, not saying the Monk couldn't win, but unless it manages to win in the first round, it would likely lose IMO.

I mean, maybe! Who knows- that's why there are too many variables. What is the constitution score of an "average" 20th level wizard?

How often does an "average" 20th level monk win initiative compared to a 20th level wizard?

And how often does an "average" 20th level fighter or paladin or rogue not have magic items? There's a certain silliness to all of this, right?

Anyway, I have a strong feeling that any serious builds and contenders are going to want to go for the first round knockout.

weird. I never read it as something that could be dispelled. I’ll have to think on that one.

Fairness is an issue here. This is up to debate. What distance they start apart, what the arena is shaped like, what objects are in the arena to hide behind, how many spellcasting components the spellcasters get, if wizards get a familiar, so on. All of these, and many more, are issues.

I personally would say that you don't start with any magic items, unless you're an artificer or are another class that has magic items (Warlocks). You can't precast any spells, have all your hit points, spell slots, and so on. You start 30-60 feet apart (up to debate), there's bright light, and if you have a class feature that gives you something, you have that thing.

Why instead of wondering dont we just set up a tournament with rules?

Each contender post his lvl 20 character using option from phb only and selecting let's say 1 very rare, 1 rare and 2-3 uncommon magic items from dmg (because even if 5th edition restrained magic items I can't see how a 20th level character wouldn't own a single one).

Then we choose a terrain/arena setup, each character is informed of his oponent beforehand and may prepare accordingly (spell slot used in preparation are not regained) and then let's roll dices in virtual arena ^^

It would take a long time to organize such a contest but it would probably be better than if THAT then you can't win but what if THIS instead...best 2 out of 3 matchs for each count 1 point for each victory...
Well it's just an idea 😆
I don't think that you have to use only the PHB, I set up this thread, and included Artificers. Any subclass and any class that is official is available. No magic items unless you already had them due to a class feature. The arena is normal terrain, smooth stone, and there are a few rocks/pillars to hide behind for Rogues.

If someone wants to actually test any of this out, you're free to do so elsewhere, but this thread is mainly for brain-working through class abilities.

Did not want to hijack the thread and was not proposing to do this here ^^ excuse me!

From EGTW. It's like a time-shaping wizard, similar to a Diviner.
Ah... never looked at that.

As far as the setup, I would limit it to things that people are most likely to have: PHB, XGtE, SCAG, etc. I think there was another thread about what books people own and maybe that would be a good place for someone to start?
