For my part, nothing beats the mid-level mix of PC capability, combined with the lingering anticipation and excitement of a new campaign.

I think that's a very common feeling, strangely I don't think I've ever played in those mid levels, although I've GM'd in them somewhat.

I agree with U_K that over-20th play is likely to soon become a lot more common, but I'm surprised apparently so few people here have tried it as yet. Maybe Waldorf, Edena and Thrin are more the exceptions to the rule than the rule.

Hi Simon! :)

I think 1st Ed. had so few rules concerning Immortal Level play (only original D&D); added to that 2nd Ed. virtually strangled such an approach.

1st ed supported play up to around 29th level and was easy to extrapolate to allow higher than that, I agree the 2nd ed 'dark age' has a lot to answer for.

You might get a different set of responses if you asked which level play to you anticipate the most. I think though people like playing at 1st level, very few people anticipate that, because it's not hard to achieve. Most people really look foward to having their players reach high levels and I assume the epci levels would get a lot more votes.

I like 4-8 the best.

I played in a game once with a 10th level campaign and it was a little too much for us. We charged headlong into everything and didn't do that bad. Except for that Lich...

Guess we can't handle the power.

I think we all like to fantasise about our PCs getting bigger and better, whether it's reaching 4th level and getting weapon spec (pity my 3rd level fighter died yesterday, came back as a ghoul :() or ascending to godhood and bending reality to our will. But often the striving is better than the achieving, so I wanted to know what level people most enjoy actually playing or GMing at.

Well, I put down 5th-9th level, although 10th-14th could also be fun. High power levels don't do anything for me.

Well, we haven't made it past lvl6 yet. My first group fell apart just as some PCs were hitting lvl4 and my new improved group is just reaching lvl6. I'm hoping I can keep this campaign interesting for long enough to at least get above lvl15.

I'd have to say 4-8 since that's about all we've done. Last two games started at 4. The previous game anded at about 6th. The group I'm running for is mostly around 5th. :)
