D&D 5E What Level was your 1st Character Death in 5e?

Not much lately since I find that after a few levels you get a lot harder to kill unless the DM is trying.

From 3rd level to about 7th level ( mid tier 2), I agree the PCs are rather robust, assuming you are not facing creatures that will snack on fallen party members.

After that and I think hubris sets in, players save their healing for when Death Saves happen, which is fine when one is an 80 Max HP 8th lvl fighter, but not a 48 HP 8th lvl anything else.

A fire giant crits for around 50 damage💀

Level 2 Monk, poisoned to death by a Wyvern. The two attacks alone downed him, and then the failed CON save against the poison ended up doing like 3x my Monk's HP in poison damage. Instant Death from Massive Damage.

(I don't think the DM had a good grasp of the encounter building/CR mechanics, putting a party of 5x 2nd level characters against a CR6 Wyvern, which one-shotted more than one PC. But we were all learning.)

Level 6 Triton Ranger, was leading the party through a ruined city. Assassin I did not see hit me with a longbow shot to my neck and it was instant (no death saves).
Missed a perception roll, his attack hit, and failed my Con save to reduce the poison damage.

I was a little peeved that I didn't really have any actions or ways to avoid it, but was walking around at 60% health in enemy territory, so the whole party is more cautious now

I usually DM, so I have only actually had one character that I was playing die (in 5e, that is). She was an 8th level Barbarian, and honestly she probably wouldn’t have died if I hadn’t been bored with the character and playing extremely recklessly with her. But the first character I killed as a DM in 5e was a 1st level barbarian. That wraith in Death House one-shotted him.

I have had 0 characters who have died indeed.
The closest was a Tiefling Bard who lost initiative to the Stirge swarm in LMNOP and had to be administered a Revivify.
My group is really good about rescuing downed companions.

2nd level druid. Death by overdamage (aquatic ghouls).

It was the last time I played AL. None of the players wanted to pay for raising my character even though it was cheaper due to acolyte background (plate armour was more important apparantly) so I had to use faction raise. No XP, no treasure.
