You think that just accepting people for what they are and not pushing them to acheive is helping them?

When it comes to what is supposed to be a fun and relaxing hobby, yes, I do believe accepting people for what they are is a good thing.

I guess I don't understand, but then again I would never play with someone I didn't like.

I've been in a situation where someone was fiorced from a group because others didnt like the way they played. It was childish, petty, and I left the group as well of my own decision. This sounds similiar, maybe even worse finding out about it over a public message board. It is cold and heartless.

Cold and heartless and sick.

Aaron L, have you learned nothing? Gaming's not about fun. It's not for enjoyment. Of course we're not meant to encourage people to be anything but the BEST! The best at what? Read on, and be enlightened...

We game in order to be able to write larger numbers in the "Experience Points" box on our character sheet. That is our reward. That is why we game. Those who interfere with the speed at which that number increases must be removed from the vicinity -- but not by asking them to leave, no sir. We must instead subtly "encourage" them to leave by allowing those who conform to our standards to write larger numbers on their sheets. This will discourage those who do not conform, and they will either leave of their own accord, or begin to conform, thus allowing us to carry on writing larger numbers.

I hope that's clear. And I hope it's also clear that the urgency of this task justifies any measures taken to accomplish it, including the degradation and humiliation of those who might otherwise be our friends. If they interfere with our numbers, they must go.

Honestly. Why is this so hard to understand?

just a game.

how many people make a living off this game?

how many of us fought for the right to play this game?

just a game, for you perhaps.

For some people, perhaps. Not for me!!!

Don't listen to these WHIPPERSNAPPERS, diaglo. They don't know the truth of it. They don't know how you died in THREE WORLD WARS to make the world safe for RPGs. Darn report program generators... I mean, rocket propelled grenades. Or something. Well, don't listen to them, I say!

I said, DON'T LISTEN TO THEM.

Can you hear me?

Put your durn hearing aid in, you ninny.

sorry, i misplaced my false teeth. and my arthritis is acting up.

some of us, did fight the good fight. some of us did come to blows over this game. some of us where persecuted for our beliefs. some of us had our books confiscated and burned by the Religious fanatics.

i still hold a grudge against Jerry Falwell, Anita Bryant, and Tipper Gore.

and yes, some people do create, manage, distribute roleplaying material for a living. how many people went to GenCon or any Con and bought products from vendors?

Okay, now I understand the analogy between RPGs and Pro sports--XPs and cash. I still think you're comparing apples and oranges, Silvey.

Too many concessions made to those who really do very little for the game. To much giving into to whiners who want everything fair and balanced to make up either for their inability to role play properly or their lame attitude that everything has to be computer game simple. It's the dumbing down of a hobby that was once the province of the intelligent to reach a generation of lip drooling vidkiddies with their heads stuck in a computer monitor or television set.

You sound very bitter, Silverthrone. Are RPGs really an ideological war for you?

I just think that enthusiasm and the simple desire to play an RPG, in this world of "drooling vidkiddies with their heads stuck in a computer monitor" should count for something. Role-playing is a skill that can be learned, not something you either know or you don't.

Fact: people tend to enjoy games more when they consider them to be "fair."

Fact: you have your own head stuck in a computer monitor right now. ;)

And how many of those people were not full-time RPG desigining professionals? How many of them are involved in gaming as a hobby? How many are supported by their s.o.s or working another job? How many of them are barely scraping by, and always have been? Even on it's best day, RPGs are a cottage industry, at best. WOTC's golden days may have been like Camelot for a while, but like Camelot, it cannot endure for long. Perhaps one day this will change, perhaps not.

But the only people restricted from playing D&D in this country were minors, when their parents decided it conflicted with their beliefs. In the few book burning incidents, the parents cooperated, and the RPG industry benefited more than suffered from the publicity. Hardly the stuff of 'Mississippi Burning'.

we fought for the rights of all to game. minors and adults.

and in some communities adults were prohibited from gaming, too.
