Lines scratched onto the wall to mark the days.

A prayer.

The beginning of a failed escape attempt (unfinished hole).

A summoning diagram.

A treasure map.

Last will and testament.

Kilroy was here with date. :)

"He who is valiant and pure of spirit may find the Holy Grail in the Castle of Aaaaaagggh"

PLEASE TAKE ONE:
(just above a little wall-mounted box with leaflets such as "Cancer of the Magick Gland: What you need to know" and "VD: All about dangerous Vampiric Diseases" and "Visit Baator!")

Limericks are important. Quite fun to do as well. And of course:

If you notice
this notice
then you'll notice
this notice
isn't worth noticing!

If you really wanted to make your players mad, you could put some sort of message that appeared to be really important but in the end turned out to really be some angst filled NPCs bad poetry or something...

heheh. No. That would be wrong.

I'd say: maps, warnings, secret messages, symbols that mean something but need to be decoded, or have been smudged , leaving your PCs with a puzzle to figure out. That can be great for expanding plot.
But also mix in non important stuff too, like initials of past folks who've been there, symbols that mean nothing, Mean WereRats Suck!, so and so the bard and his band ROCK! etc...

OK, silly there at the end...but you don't want to make everything on the walls of the dungeon mean something because that would be way too easy, and where's the fun in that?

How about several passages and rooms, at random, just have a big "X" chalked onto the wall -- the explanation being that some previous explorer with a bad memory was marking places they'd been ... but don't tell the players that.
