What movies are you waiting for this year?

THE WHOLE TEN YARDS - Might catch it on cable.

KILL BILL: VOLUME 2 - Liked the first one, looking forward to the second half.

THE ALAMO - Buzz is very negative. Probably a rental.

THE PUNISHER - I was very ambivalent on this at first - they tried it once already, and look how that turned out. However, I've heard a bunch of positive things since then. I'm willing to give it a chance.

SHAOLIN SOCCER - Zero interest.

VAN HELSING - This has a lot of potential, but the trailer left me a bit cold. I'll probably check it out on the off chance it's worthwhile. Also, Kate Beckinsale in tight outfits.

TROY - Very excited about this. The trailer makes it looks very cool. Must See.

SHREK 2 - A probable rental after its DVD release.

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW - I don't know enough about this to make a decision on whether to see it or not yet.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN - Probably a rental. I might do it in the theatre, though - I enjoyed the first two well enough. I'll definitely see it one way or another.

THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK - Has a very 40K look to it, if you ask me. The property has enough cred with me to get me into the theatre.

SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW - There's some chance that this could suck. However, it looks awesome. Must See.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS - Zero interest.

GARFIELD - Zero interest.

SPIDER-MAN 2 - I didn't go crazy for the first one like a lot of folks did, but I still liked it quite a bit. Must See.

CATWOMAN - Not at gunpoint. This looks really, really bad.

KING ARTHUR - Mixed feelings on this. Looks like a Bay-esque retelling of the tale mixed with neopagan pap. The trailer is pretty good, though - I'll be making a call on it closer to its release.

I, ROBOT - Not enough info on this yet. I'd be surprised if it isn't crappy.

THE BOURNE SUPREMACY - I'll definitely rent it.

ALIEN VS. PREDATOR - I'd be stunned if this turns out to be anything other than terrible.

THUNDERBIRDS - Not being 5 years old or plagued by mental illness, I have no interest.

THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2 - No chance.

INFERNAL AFFAIRS - Know nothing about it.

THE YES MEN - If this stars Chris Squire and Steve Howe, I'm in.

RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE - Not a zombie movie fan. Not even a rental for me.

SON OF THE MASK - Looks god-awful.

THE INCREDIBLES - I'll probably rent it, but I expect it to be very good, like Pixar's other films.

ALEXANDER - Mixed feelings. Might be okay, but there's not enough info yet. Will make a decision closer to release time.

BLADE: TRINITY - Must See.

MEET THE FOCKERS - Will watch on cable if I'm channel-surfing.

So that gives me four movies to the good, one of which I am not really looking forward to, and a LOT of "no ways". Standard mix ;)

I am opposed to Sky Captain on the grounds that, like three or four movies before it, it is using the Stargate music in the trailer. I might not mind so much if not for the fact that Stargate is still on TV! It's a cheesy move. Write your own danged music. I will only see this if I hear really good things.

That's pretty common practice in trailers. For example, the first trailer for Gladiator used music from the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack. Several later movies have used the music from Gladiator. And how many times have you heard O Fortuna used in trailers?

Another thing to remember is that trailers generally aren't put together by the creative team working on the movie - they're done by a studio department or outsourced.

The reason is this is done is that when the trailers are assembled, the music for the movie generally isn't ready yet. What do you expect them to do, hire a composer and orchestra to write music just for the trailer? Which would have, incidentally, absolutely no connection to the actual soundtrack in the movie?

Yeah, it's cheesy. But chances are there's more than one movie you liked whose trailer pulled the same trick. FotR, for example, whose trailed used music from Requiem for a Dream.

The trailer for "Lemony Snicket" uses music from both "Edward Scissorhands" and "The Addams Family". Must be open season on Danny Elfman.

Me, I'm waiting for these.

KILL BILL: VOLUME 2
THE PUNISHER
SHAOLIN SOCCER (Not that we'll ever get a theatrical release in Finland. Probably a DVD sometime next year.)
VAN HELSING
TROY
THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK (Bwahahahahaa!)
SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW
AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (From what I've seen, this movie's gonna be so weird I just have to see it.)
SPIDER-MAN 2
KING ARTHUR
