Wow, so many Equilibrium fans. I first saw it the day after sitting through the second Matrix film and went, "Hey, look! You can spend less money and get COOLER fight scenes! Gee, all it takes is imagination and hard work." It's got its problems (takes itself WAY too seriously, for one), but HOO there are some awesome fight scenes. The stick fight between Taye Diggs and Christian Bale has a great moment that subverts virutally every fight scene I've ever seen -- Bale comes at Diggs, Diggs steps aside and as Bale goes by he ENTIRELY FAILS TO NOT SMACK HIM ACROSS THE BACK. Most fight scenes, I'm yelling at the guy "He's got his back to you! Take him down!" and no, they just stand there and let the other guy turn around. Not this one. Very nice.
And that last swordfight against the bodyguards is AWESOME. Watch carefully -- note how the sheath gets cut to a point by one guy's sword and then ends up buried in the chest of another guy? Now that's imaginative choreography.
Other overlooked beauties:
Deep Rising -- a GREAT stupid monster film. If you liked Tremors, if you sat through Anaconda, you'll like this. Plus Famke Janssen and Kevin J O'Connor. Sweet. And possibly the best ratchet pull you'll ever see.
Dog Soldiers/Ginger Snaps -- two great werewolf movies, two totally different cinema experiences. Dog Soldiers is a tense actioner with great fight scenes and desperate battles for survival. Ginger Snaps is a hilarious (but tension-filled) teen angst picture with liberal doses of gore. Both are deserving of wider recognition.
Versus/Wild Zero -- Japanese zombie movies -- one is John Woo hyper-stylized gun-fu with undead (and a GREAT swordfight) and the other is wacky John Waters/Bubblegum/Road Movie/Kid Finds Self Through Rock and Roll movie featuring not only zombies, not only UFOs, not only the unstoppable rockabilly outfit known as Guitar Wolf (members Guitar Wolf, Bass Wolf and Drums Wolf), but also the one and only moment in cinema in which a guy
(spoiler)
DRAWS A KATANA OUT OF HIS GUITAR AND CUTS DOWN A GIGANTIC UFO TO SAVE THE WORLD FROM ZOMBIES
Indeed, Equilibrium rocketh mightily, and so doth Brotherhood of the Wolf, Boondock Saints and Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai (which I saw on tv just a couple of days ago).
However, on my personal and highly subjective list, the number one movie that far too few people have ever seen... Battle Royale. The second and third ones would be A Knight's Tale and Reign of Fire, both of which I honestly think to be good movies.
Equilibrium (Yes, Like everyone else)
Dog Soldiers (not bad for a werewolf film)
Boondock Saints (hardcore!)
and lets add three that haven't been taken yet:
Bubba Ho-Tep (redemptive Elvis Mummy Picture with Bruce C.)
Ravenous (twisted, twisted, twisted--although this will be a movie you hate or you love).
The Red Violin (Samuel L. in a fantastically constructed film)
