what musics best to play d+d or warhammer

Whoa. You listen to DJ John Kelly? ...snippage... FYI: And I don't think he'll mind if I tell you guys this, but he plays RPGs too. Mostly GURPS though, because that's the system our usual GM Chris uses for his games.

Quick! Add him to the list with Vin Diesel!

I actually find Lord of the Rings to be a not-so-friendly soundtrack for gaming. True, the soundtrack is awesome.... ...snippage... The reason why is that the composer had written the score to be very precise along with the emotions of the scenes. Doing this makes the score very specific to just the original movie. Which....doesn't help your game.

Example: ...even more snippage... So, you put this track on while your players are in battle, then in the middle of moment when one of you is rolling to slice the Orc Chief's head....the music (instead of continuing) suddenly calms down and changes tone.

If this happens durring an action/fight scene, we just assume that the perspective has changed. Like Slo Mo, or the camera has panned away from the group to allow for scenerey. Also, we keep the volume lower. So if you are talking you really cant hear the music, but if there is a lul- like the DM needs to figure somthing out, there is thematic music in the background.

During my Street Fighter campaign...I found soundtracks like Black Rain and Backdraft to be great for this.

...yet even more snippage: stuff about video game soundtracks...

Don't just look at fantasy movies for soundtracks. Or only look at movies you like. While Waterworld wasn't a big hit with most of you....the soundtrack is awesome and I use it in my library of bg music during my games. I hear the soundtrack to First Knight is also good game music despite the fact that the movie blew rotten donkey arse.

Yeah it took forever to get the Soundtrack to Icewind Dale. I would expect warcraft 3 andf Diablo 2 to have really good soundtracks too. Note taken about the non-fantasy/movie I did not like soundtracks. I definately plan on checking out backdraft and waterworld.

I've never worried about trying to "cue" my game soundtrack with the game; it's just mood music and should be more in the background than that, IMO.

Also; the Heroes of Might and Magic games have pretty decent soundtracks for RPG background music.

And I despise any suggestions of heavy metal/hip hop/techno/pop music of any kind during a game session personally. Especially a fantasy game. I guess I could potentially do it for a Modern game, but I doubt it even then.

We fire up Live365 and point it to a station called Top 40 Through The Ages. The top 40 song lists for the last 50 or 60 years. If for some reason my DSL is down or Love 365 is slow, its a mix of popular music form the 1940s through the 1980s. The odd thing is, the music sort of does act as a soundtrack. More often than not, the lyric or modd of the music we're lsitening to seems to be relevent to the scene at hand.

Really? Cool.

Hey, he may not care about the RPG stuff, but "Mixed Under a Desert Sky/ funkydesertbreaks2" got a guy I know who was a Rush/Black Sabbath fan to give techno a chance.

That's one of my favorite CDs by the way

We don't use a soundtrack when gaming, because of a lack of equipment and no real desire to use one.

That being said, the heavy metal is really more for things like Warhammer 40K (since Bolt Thrower is a very, um, appropriate band for that, for reasons I mentioned above ;-), though I can see it in a hack'n'slash style of game. When playing Shadowrun and metroing to the game, I used to listen to as much heavy metal and techno as I could, to kind of get into the mood.

yo people i would like to know what music you play when playing either d+d or warhammer or any other role playing game, does it in any way help you stamina

I'll add another vote for the Conan and LotR soundtracks. Always use them for background music when playing, and even writing up campaign material.

Well...

Can't go wrong with soundtracks. Personally, the soundtracks for Conan the Barbarian, 13th Warrior, and Lord of the Rings (all 3 for the current movies, plus the 1 for Bakshi's animated version) work great. I'd think that the soundtracks for movies such as Braveheart, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, the Last Samurai, Xena, & any other sort of near-genre entertainment (i.e., more historical/fantastical in nature) would work.

Yeah, those would proably all work well. And while Conan the Destroyer may have been a lame movie, it does have a pretty good sountrack for gaming.

I like the soundtrack from the Icewind Dale computer game boxed set. Each of the tracks were recorded to evoke a specific emotion for a specific setting and it is easy to pick a track to reflect what the party is doing. Of course, LOTR makes the list though I don't like it as much as IWD. Movie soundtracks have a central tune and most of the songs are a variation of that tune. That being the case, movie soundtracks get repetitive. I also like the soundtrack to the computer game "The Dig" by Lucasarts though it is so old that you might have trouble finding it. "Black Aria" by Glen Danzig is a great one for darker themed adventures. Despite what you may think of Danzig this one has no vocals and is purely orchestral. What I do is listen to a bunch of my CDs as I am writing my adventures and I visualise the settings while listening to particular tracks. I then will copy the tracks that work with certain settings to a single CD and will make notes of when to play those tracks for maximum impact. I don't like to have music constantly playing as I have to talk over it and also when you do pick a track to play it has more impact.

We hardly ever use music while playing. I do, however, like to think of a defining song for NPC characters I use.

The one time we did use music in a game was...very odd.

In a V:TM game, we were raiding the stronghold of an opposing force, (Which was a bar in Tacoma, Washington). It turned out that the leader of the group was a Malkavian (crazy vampire for those who don't know). After we crashed our car through the wall of the bar, he looked up, reached over, and started a song playing on a ghetto blaster he had with him, then took his sword and came to attack us. What song did he turn on? Rock Lobster by the B52's.

So, I said, "Hey, my brother has that CD, I can go get it." So, we put rock lobster on and set it to loop. We looped that song for all of a 3 hour battle (in real time) which in game time took 5 minutes. It added a surreal quality to the battle.
