"Pacific Rim" - After all the media hype there was no way that it could live up to its press, for me.
lol it absolutely met my expectation - All hype and no subtance

My wife, for example, generally avoids the Marvel TV universe because of this. Similarly with Doctor Who, for her - when fans look down on you for *not* seeing a thing, that can often ruin the experience you could have had.
For me, a lot of anime falls into this category, I think.
I don't think the media/hype has ever actually ruined something for me. Though there are definitely things that I've grown tired of the hype over.....
One of these is the Daniel Craig 007 films. They aren't that good (especially the last two).
Another is the coming SW movie.
There is no way it'll live up to the hype.
But at least with this one I get the hype. You don't spend $4 billion. Dollars aquiring a property & NOT crank up the hype machine.
(Personally as a SW fan? They had me at: "New SW movie, 12/18/15". Sold. I'm there. You don't need to tell/show me anything else..... but even if it sucks ass more than the prequels it won't be the worst movie I've ever seen/way I've wasted 2 hours)
Now let me reiterate, I don't think it's a bad series, but I really don't get all the hype around it.
Back on topic though, I've thought of a new example, JJ Abrams. Now this is particularly telling for me because the new Star Wars is just around the corner and to say it's been hyped is like asking "are you even alive?"Yet despite the acclaim of his numerous TV series (Alias, LOST, Fringe) I could never get into them. I don't even think the movies he's directed are any hot stuff. Disliked Mission Impossible 3, and never watched Super8. I will say though I enjoyed his Star Trek reboot, but Into Darkness left a bad taste in my mouth.
. Quantum of Solace was decent enough
Not trying to convince you, but to explain, at least from my own perspective: I, personally, found the setting pretty fresh and evocative and the chemistry between actors/characters beyond compare in a series so young.
Lost I liked... for a while. It suffered from them not actually having a plan for what was going on. His Star Trek... well, the first was okay, the second contains a violation of Trek assumptions that I find very difficult to get around. And, to be honest, they are action movies, which was never really the main thrust of Trek, and it isn't like we really need more action movies.
Super8, that was fun. I'll give him that one.
And this is an excellent example of how personal taste matters. I hadn't watched a Bond film in a long time, because I didn't have much interest. But some friends of mine were going, so what the heck.
I was bored. Boredboredbored. QoS was a long string of killing people. No charm. No panache. No style. Bond was a death robot without personality. No real plot or story. Just killing people. Turned me off Daniel Craig as an actor for a while, until I saw Cowboys and Aliens.
If I hadn't been on-board with "Firefly" from the beginning, things like Browncoat Nation might have put me off the show too.
When it comes to Craig, I see his run as Bond to be a squandered opportunity. For me, at least, he portrays a character I would say is much closer to the "thug in a suit" vibe I got from the original novels which, admittedly, I haven't read in 40 years. They started him out well and seem to have largely coasted, from that excellent beginning.
Agreed.
And I cut my Bond teeth on Roger Moore and Sean Connery, so I really don't get the attraction of "thug in a suit".
