As far as I'm concerned, gnomes will always look like this to me:

Do they all sound like Tom Bosley?

The Auld Grump, gods I hated that show... I had to take care of some kids who loved it.

I think I may have played them all, though the memory is fuzzy.

I don't think I'd play an elf. I don't think I'd do a good job of playing someone who has all the time in the world...

Gnome was my first AD&D character, I love the little guys. Half-orc is my current character (a wizard) -- I love that guy too.

Elf rogues

Somebody should really consider a campaign in which elves are less pure and good and more tricksy and chaotic. It would be a simple matter of switching the preferred class from wizard to rogue. (Think of all the bother it would save if the rogue didn't have to constantly be saying "I search for secret doors"). I've always felt elves had the potential to be quite sinister or at least mysteriously unpredictable.

If I'm not mistaken there some mythological basis for treacherous elves. Some German folklore depicts them as such ... snatching children from their parents arms. In a way, Galadriel's elves in have a bit of that intimidating quality (not so much like Elrond's folk).

I'm not saying I'd necessarily want to go all the way evil with this ... but I'd like to season my elves with a soupcon of chaos and trickery.

Half-dragon, half-illithid, half-woodchuck, etc races- come on, are these just a little over the top and silly?
....

I agree completely. The whacky cross-breeding in 3e is really grating -- and can generate disturbing mental images as well.

Almost as annoying: drow PCs, 'gith' PCs, tieflings, etc. What is with that crap? :\

(I still like 1e gnome illustionist/thieves. But 3e 'minstrel' gnomes -- wtf?)

Not a big fan of many of the half races.
Gnomes and halflings are never a consideration for me. Not sure why but when it comes down to making a character the thought of those races never crosses my mind.

I almost always play a human or dwarf.

I was going to say Gnome until I opened the thread and saw "Half-Orc".

I actually played a Gnome once (back in 1e and not since) - he was one of my first characters. Got up to 4th level before he was killed. The first character I'd gotten that high level and the first one where I was really bothered that he got killed.

In almost 28 years, I've never played a Half-Orc. No desire to do so.

Right now I'm pretty much sticking with Humans, though I would not be adverse to playing an Elf or a Dwarf if necessary. Halfling....meh, only if I had to.

BUT NO GNOMES OR HALF-ORCS!

"Annoying gnome"! LOL

In the recent issue of Dragon Magazine, in my *Zogonia* cartoon, Kev (a human rogue) refers to gnomes as "annoying."

Which they are!

So my vote goes for gnomes. If I ever played a gnome, it would only be for the sinister purpose of infecting the other players with a hatred for gnomes.

It's been done in Dark Sun. They are the ultimate in ruthless thieves as a race. Morality means nothing to them.
