What Races are worth their LA?

As previoustly stated, any LA beyond +1 is a pretty big hit.
Oddly enough, templates offer a much better package than races of the same LA. I'll take a half-dragon or half-vampire any day over what I'd get from a race (say, deep gnomes or drow, respectively). This is rather illogical, since a template is layered on top of a race, allowing half-dragon dwarves or half-vamp humans to reap pretty serious benefits while retaining all their innate advantages. Yet that's how it is.
Githzerai are a decent +2 LA, especially for their favored class of monk, but for many other classes too (hard to go wrong with +6 Dex).
Githzerai, OTOH, have much lamer ability score adjustments and SLA's, yet are also +2 LA. Go figure.
Catfolks are popular simply because they have ability score bonuses without penalties. For some damned silly reason, they also get a point of natural armor.
Goliaths are just sickeningly overpowered for +1 LA.
Ogres and centaurs make good beaters if you're willing to invest six levels in them.
One of my gamers has decided kobolds are great for arcane casters, due to their combination of AC bonuses from small size, Dex bonus, and natural armor. Could be he's right.
