Dwarves are more or less worth their +1. Wait a second, they don't have LA +1.

Whisper Gnomes are worth their LA +1 even moreso. Oh wait...

I definately feel the same way about these comments. Some races I think are worth the LA include:

Slyph (MMII)-3 HD, +5 LA, Outsider with great stat boosts, improved invisibility at will, a limited summoning ability, and casts as a 7th level sorcerer. Additionally, they gain sorcerer caster levels with each HD they gain, which is really powerful if interpreted literally.

Marrulurk (Sandstorm)-3 HD, +1 LA, Great stat boosts, small, death attack, sneak attack +2d6, poison use, a strange breath attack, and +2 natural armor. What's not to love?!

Varoot Nerra (Fiend Folio)-1 HD, +3 LA, Boosts to Dex, Con, Wis, and Cha, +2 natural armor, Outsider, Reflective Spell Resistance!, A few elemental resistances, a few racial bonus feats.

Ethergaunts (Fiend Folio)-These guys range in HD from 5 to 16 and in LA from +4 to +7. They have limited immunity to spells, some of the highest INT bonuses in the game (+20 INT for the black ethergaunt), great natural armor, and cast spells as a wizard at ECL-3. Plus some other benefits.

Gnolls and lizard folk are both actually really good for their LA as beaters, especially once you add two or more class levels. They could also work as second string clerics, particularly if you concentrate on buffs.

Hi,

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I was wondering if you could elaborate your thinking here; I have never seen anything approaching a credible gnoll build that isn't bested by a default half-orc of equal ECL. I'd like your statement to be true (and it might be for the Lizardfolk, esp. given +5 NA), but with gnolls I think you've actually picked the single most disadvantaged (potential) PC race in the game.

One's I've seen work in play:
Minotaur
Werebear
Centaur
Medusa
Halfdragon

If something's LA is too high I recommend lowering it (such as vampire). Werebear I actually increased by +1.
