What RPG(s) did you stick with an earlier edition?

I want to say that I didn't move on to the latest version of L5R which I think went the way of special dice which I normally can't be bothered with, but then I realised I mostly bought the books of the previous edition to read through and haven't ever played it.

I am running 5e DnD, not 5.5, because I don't think 5.5 improved the game more than it made changes I dislike.

I prefer 1e Paranoia, because it's perfect and the skill system is almost bureaucratic, which is a brilliant thing to do for Paranoia.

I prefer 2e Gamma World; it has just the right amount of gonzo craziness for me, and later editions' mechanics aren't better, just different (IMHO). That said, I do love the version based on 4e DnD, but think it makes for a better one or two shot, rather than a campaign.

Pathfinder 1E. I just couldn't make the switch to the 2nd edition; fortunately there's still more third-party material coming out for PF1 (along with plenty of existing third-party products I don't have yet), so it's not like I'm lacking for new (and new to me) content.

Another for the PF1 pile. I want 3E/PF1 but with bounded accuracy. 5E really isnt it tho. PF1 has incredible character customization, deep setting lore, and great adventures. Im not one to shy away from more material. I do have to cut here and there, add some house rules here, etc.. Though I find the work worth doing. Paizo stuff is just better for me than WotC stuff.

I didnt move to PF2 becasue its wound too tightly and adopted a lot of the 4E stuff I didnt like. (Thats not to say its bad, I think its deigned well, this is a taste thing)

I’m another PF1 GM. I’ve tried PF2 three different times running the game from 1-5. It’s just too tight. It wasn’t for me or my players. I was really disappointed I could not make it work for us. In a marketing meeting I’m the target audience.

We really love PF1 and return to it frequently. Currently running Shattered Star and we start book 3 tomorrow night.

The Palladium RPG (later renamed to Palladium Fantasy). The first edition is kind of rough around the edges, but it's still largely its own thing. The later editions/printings tried to shoehorn the whole Megaversal system in there, and I hate them for that.

Also, talking about the Palladium system in generally, Valley of the Pharaohs remains my favorite iteration of that system. Though, somewhat amusingly, even way back then, they didn't explicitly tell you how to make a skill roll (something they STILL don't do, or didn't the last time I checked).
Right?

(emphasis mine)

I like short and punky rpgs, so the 1st editions of things very often suit me the best. Later editions usually add complications and polish, neither of which I value much. And they always, always add bloat. I do value shelf space.
  • Apocalypse World: I prefer the simplicity of 1st edition. I've backed Burned Over, but there's a good chance I won't use it.
  • Pendragon: I'm still on 1st edition. I've never even read later editions. 6th edition looks pretty, but I don't understand why it's so huge: nearly 500 pages across two hardcovers!
  • Ghostbusters: On this one, I think the general consensus is (rightly) that 1st ed was better.
  • Twilight: 2000: The later editions have their charms, but not enough for me to run them or even keep the hard copies. If I run it again it will still be in 1st.
  • Traveller: Classic is still my favourite, but Mongoose 2nd is close and I would use it for some groups and purposes. To me, all the intermediate editions (and T5) are blatantly inferior.
  • TSR D&D: I guess this doesn't really count because I would run an OSR game instead nowadays; but if I was to run it, it'd be OD&D or Holmes.

So I have yet to update to the latest edition of Paranoia, as I had gone in strongly on the previous, card based offering from Mongoose. My motivation is mostly that I don't get to run it often.
