What RPG systems do you like?

GURPS remains my favorite system. As long as you start out with GURPS Lite (freely available for download) and only the rules additions you actually need, the system is dead easy.

And it is also very easy to create exactly the character you want. Easier, in any case, than with D&D or indeed most incarnations of d20. Don't get me wrong, I like D&D - but character creation is constrained.

And many GURPS supplements are of extremely high quality. My favorite GURPS line is Transhuman Space, which is one of the most brilliant SF settings out there...

3.5e
Exalted

Those are the two current systems I'm playing in/with. I liked 3.0e, but think 3.5e is a better base. I also liked the earlier World of Darkness stuff (Mage & Vampire are the only two I've played), but think Exalted is a better base system.

I prefer the 1e AD&D system for my D&D fix. D20 seems cool for Star Wars, but the old d6 system was pretty nice as well but could be abused easier. GURPS is rock solid. I like the skills and 3d6 task resolution system. The curve you get makes highly skilled people less prone to failure than they would be in D20 where every dice roll on d20 has equal probability. The Mayfair DC Heroes system was the bomb, my favorite Supers game ever.

AEG tops my list

For published systems, I have found 7th Sea (not Swashbuckling Adventures) and the original Legend of the Five Rings systems to be superb, because they are designed for the setting. Both systems are skill based (which I prefer), and everything from attributes to skills to combat resolution enhances the setting. Customizable systems are great (GURPS, d20), but I really got into these two.

As for unpublished systems, well no one here would know it...

GURPS is the only non-d20 system that I've played and really liked, but that is partly a matter of the DMS I've played with (VERY good GURPS DM, Not-so-good World of Darkness and Chaosium Cthulu DMS)

MMmmmm, systems...

For d20 the Spycraft incarnation does quite well.

Non d20 definitively I go with Silhouette (Dream Pod 9, used in Heavy Gear, Jovian Chronicles, Tribe 8, etc) and with the Hero System (Hero Games, used in Champions, Fantasy Hero, etc).

I liked the way WEG's Starwars RPG ran too, the ruleset seemed to fit well with the heroic feel of the genre, at least how we played it. }:)

Ars Magica is probably the game I have played the longest and most consistently, albeit in three different editions. I absolutely love the magic system and the sense of community and time that the game engenders.

Ah, Ars Magica. What a great system. Spawned the famous White Wolf storyteller system, and has been owned by, like everyone! Ars Magica definitely has the best system for MAGIC. It also allows for a cohesive passage of time.

The D20 system is a great system. I’m not saying it has the best settings, but the flexibility of the whole ‘class + feats + skills = character’ thing really works well for just about everything. People who complain that their D&D games aren’t character intensive enough simply aren’t making good characters. Systems are rules, not game content. No one but you and the guy running the game can institute that.

Shadowrun did have a great setting, but when I played it (the first edition) the mechanics were hell. I haven’t really looked at it since then. Maybe they’ve cleaned it up, then I’d say it would be cool.

Still, D20 is definitely the way to go. Favorite d20 games: d20 Modern, D&D 3.5.

my favorites are

1.) Dnd3E - I like it better then the older versions.

2.) Rolemaster - Loved this and played until DnD3e came out.

3.)Lejendary Adventure - Way cool and fast, play and have written for this one.

4.) Runequest - liked playing it and still have it.

5.) Shadowrun - Best magic system I have played and just works. The d6 can get on your nerves though.

6.) Traveller - really like the d20 version but own the old 3 book box set.

7.) Like and have not played Ars Magica, World of Darkness and d20 modern.

Anxiously awaiting HARP from I.C.E. coming out soon.

Mutants and Masterminds: It streamlines combat, and allows for a good deal of costumization of characters. I like to think of it as 'd20' done right. It takes some heavy enforcement during character creation, but it seems just as versatile as the Hero system to me, without all the rules headaches that go along with Hero. Great for Planescape campaigns.

Exalted and Shadowrun 3e: These games are perfect examples of the meshing of setting and rules.

Ars Magica: Best fitting magic system I've found, even amongst the company mentioned above.
