What they should have done at DDXP

They should have shown more from the game than just combat.
Character creation, rituals, power/ability usage out of combat, skill usage besides the escape sequence where we didn't really got any insight on what skills can do now, etc.

Why do you care Derren, you won't be playing it anyway.

He just wanted more things to complain about.

I think they should have maybe had more than one pre-gen'd character for a class, so we get a little more sense of the different builds, rather than just one build for each class. That'd tell us more without them having to reveal boatloads of rules like higher-level play would require.

How nice.

Even if he does truly not want to play, can you even understand that one may regret 4e is not living to one's expectations, and that one might have wanted 4e, just not THAT 4e ?

I can't help feeling when I read that kind of things that 4e is just a new kind of bigotry.

Sorry if I target you tonight, your post is certainly not the worse of this kind, but you expect to win over any kind of sceptics, you might want to do better than that.

It'd simply be too difficult to ramp up all the DMs' rules-fu on such short notice. Even such notable gearheads as James Wyatt had to occasionally look up rules when we asked questions... and he's one of the core designers. System mastery takes time and WotC intelligently chose to limit the complexity of their presentation to 1st-level adventuring.

Level one gives new hints to what is to come but reveals very little. It keeps you in suspence and wondering what it must be like at higher levels. Its a marketing scheme. I imagine they did the same thing for 3x and 2nd.

Indeed. I call a spade a spade. Derren is a renowned threadcrapper.

Yeah, I can understand that. And I would be a little more vocal about acknowledging it if he were interested in presenting himself in that way, instead of how he actually presents himself: seeking to find anything he can construe as negative concerning 4e (look at the Escape from Sembia thread where he basically tries to frame a DM's choice about allowing an action as something negative about 4e, despite the fact that it was the DM's choice to allow particular actions, not the game system's).

If he were more like Lizard (who actually demonstrates real critical thought and takes in other arguments when he replies), then maybe his word would be taken a little more seriously.

I can't help feeling when I read that kind of things that 4e is just a new kind of bigotry.

How is people being sick of Derren's threadcrapping indicative that a game system is bigotry? I'm sorry, but that makes no sense. At all.

As I've said before, I'm not here to sell anyone on anything, win popularity contests, make friends, or anything of the sort.

I'm not familiar with your history, but on this thread, it was you and eleran who crapped. Derren's comments were on topic and constructive. Then you guys tore into him. Just a thought.

And this helps the discussion how?

Back on topic - I think so much has been revealed already concerning 4e that WOTC wanted to keep somethings a surprise.

I agree with Ranger Wickett that a 'build a paragon character' brainstorm would have been an excellent idea and showcased a portion of high level play without giving the game away.

Ooookay...

Obviously we're not making ourselves clear. And since we've done our best to do so, and half the posts in this thread make it blatantly obvious that it is clearly beyond our ability to do so (because the horrible alternative is that we have successfully done so and you guys have decided that you just don't care), there's little point in me attempting to elaborate here. Needless to say, my trigger-finger is itching for an excuse.

Feel free to make my day. If you don't know why, then I guess it sucks to be you.
