What to do about Greedy Players?

If the players don't care and it isn't causing bad feelings maybe it really isn't a problem.

I wouldn't give him a cursed item or similar targeted punishment. If the cursed item was in a treasure horde and made sense being there--great, but otherwise I think it sets up a "you're picking on me" situation.

Keep throwing difficult encounters at the party where having the right character with the right item would greatly increase their chances of success. This is the best way to promote sharing the loot.

If the problem is his outward greediness and his non-heroic behavior, well NPCs remember that type of thing when it's time to hand out the "key to the city" or free healing.

If greed is a big part of his character concept, I'd say let him be a greed monster and no crying when it has rational in-game affects. If he ever did a non-selfish act I'd consider pulling him aside and asking him why he is acting so out-of-character.

The issue started when the PC's encountered a secret community, which consisted of less than 40 people and between these said 40 people, they had maybe 50 gp to rub between them. The PC's were allowed to leave only if that tithed to the communities temple and did an act of kindness.
Well, as a player I would consider the "you cannot leave unless" an evil act. Nobody has the right to enslave me just because I happened to find their "secret" village. Tithing on top of taking care of a problem they could not handle would cause me to just leave. And if they tried to stop me, slaughter would ensue.

If the threat to them is such that I can handle it but they cannot, then how can they hold me against my will. That they try to hold me against my will is evil.

If it is a threat they could take care of then why do they just get their jollies holding the power of life and death over others, i.e. Evil.

I don't see the character as greedy. At worst he has his own enlightened self-interest at heart. And usually when he enters a village and they ask for help, the village offers a reward, not tithing. Rediculous.

Mirage_Patrick - props on catching that aspect - I hadn't thought of that.

I have a question:
You only describe the greedy player and the generous player.
Is anyone else playing?
ALL of them are generous to a fault? The generous player is acting like a paladin - why would the other players be that generous - If I'm playing an adventurer, I damn well am not going to give all my profits away after risking my life.
