What to play on National D&D day

DungeonMaester

First Post
I just bought the 'Complte Arcane' Book, and im impressed with the three base classes in it, although not so much on some of the prcs. But with all the great feats and spells I must make up my mind on what to play. The stats im using are as follows: 18, 18, 12, 13, 12, 12- Which is 48 point buy startin g at 3rd level.

Ideal 1) Warlock

I have not came up with any backround for this yet, but beside it being a rather selfish and powergaming class, it looks like a lot of fun. This is one thing I dont get, which is spells cast per day. His abilties are spell like, so I rmemever correctly you can cast a spell like ability 1 per spell level, so a 1st level spell can be casted once a day, and 9th level spells can be casted 9 times a day.

If that is true for the warlock then on the subject of casting

A warlocks invocations are equal to a spell level of half the warlock's caster level. So if my warlock was 4th level then be 2nd level, so he could cast them 2 times a day.

Is that all correct?

Ideal 2) Wu jen

When I read this, the first thing that poped into my head was Zelda/Shiek from LoZ,OoT and SSBM. My angle is a human or kyton that was rummored to be part of the DePaul family (A bloodline of my characters which turned out to be super powerful) He believes that a male DePaul had a affiar with whom ever his mother is, and the DePauls used there powers to make her go away to cover it up.

I like everything about this class. I think i'd go with ethier fire, water or streal as my starting spells.

Ideal 3) Warmage

Taken in by the forest walkers after being expled from the city at a young age for having touble controling his powers as the sprout. The Druids helped him harness his arcane abilties so long as he kept his vow that he would help the druids in there goal of bring down civilization to the time of the forest walkers.

I usually think of what I want the character to do, or figure out how he acts, and then try to see if I can build a framework for that character's roleplaying from the available classes. All of those builds are valid - but what do you want your character to do?

Mystic? Wu Jen, probably, but you could also do that with Warlock.

Bloodthirsty Spellcaster? Either Warlock or Warmage would work depending on what you wanted his history to be like.

Scion of Extraplanars? Warlock is your man.

Officer in the City Defense Force? Warmage.

---

So, what's your character do for a living?

Warlocks can cast any invocation they know all day, no exceptions - this includes the eldritch blast.

Honestly read the class entry again, - it's stated quite clearly - this is probably the most common question asked about the warlock.

"...."

Wu Jen- He devotes his time to adventuring to unlock secerts about the DePaul family, to find out who is mother his and if he has any ties to them.

The Depauls are a family Linage I have plaied for a long time, since 1990 when I started and includes this for a most current keepes.

Robert 'Rigamortis' DePaul- Wizard 75/ Palemaster 10. Robert, spent his life obsessed with finding a way to raise from the dead the greatest teachers to learn from. This went on for a long time in till he relized that by the time he was able to raise them from the dead, he had leanred everything from them that he could learn by studing thier work and coming to his own conculsion. From then on, He has been on a extended vaction to the Nine Pits of hell, coming to the surfaces every so often to check up on his family.

Walter DePaul- Cleric 20/Paragon. Driven mad by his brother, Walter has always looked for a way to get out of his brother's shadow. While he has done some amazing things, he still can not top his brother, and feels doomed to be 2nd string. Most recently, he accpeted his fate, and rose up to the higher planes of existances, leaving a clone in his place to watch over the castle.

Artemis DePaul- Walter's twin brother, whom like Rigamortis rebeled against his family and set out for adventure in the high seas. This didnt last long when the ship Artemis was on tried to invade druid lands, and was torn asunder. Dispite the failed invasion, the druids treated the POW with care as they healed up from many wounds from the battle. Artemis's plight made for a interesting story for the Druids, who have a grand plan to bring down civilation. Forming a pact, Artemis became one of the most powerful druids in the tribe, and spread fear and terror through out the land to any who would choose Civilation over Nature. On one fateful day, He invaded the DePaul Castle with his Colossal vermin army of 35 Devastation insects. Unable to fend them off, Walter Had to Summon his brother from the pits of hell. RObert, seing the damage and destrcution his little brother was capable of new that he could be a threat to him and banished him to the negitive energy plane, where no one has heard from him since.

Sir and Lady Depaul- (npc paladin/ Shadowbane Inquesitors.) Alot is unknow about the two who started the DePaul Legacy. Its said that they are the higist rank in the mysterouis SBI orgonizations, and they work as agents closly with extra deminstional bringers of justices Such as the Invevitbales.

If I play this, he's got his work cut out for him.

WarMage- He is going to be a 'tool' for the Druids, the same one that raised Artemis. While being a double agent adventure, he will gather information for them, and cuase a bit of choas as well.

Warlock- Monk Wanna be. Humor ensues.

Ive read it over a few times, and thier is no text that I saw to support you claim, which it is in till proven.

At the end of the first paragraph under Invocations "A warlock can use any of his invocations he knows at will..."

I would go for Warmage and see if you can get the optional spell learning thing from PHBII.

Thanks joker, But I think im going with the Warlock, since there is a strong chance that there will be a Monk in the party. That will make for some great role playing and a great Rivialy. The only aspect about warlocks I dont like is that they have rather selfish spells.

As for the WarMage, im going to keep him for a rainy day. Putting the Wu Jen next on the rp food chain.

So, where should I put the abilties and what skills are good, although I cant see my cahracter using most of them, but it depends on the setting.

As far as feats, going with Vow of Poverty and firends. Its a 'Anything you can do I can do better' thing about proving himself to the monks.

Going warlock you'll need point blank shot and precise shot.
Pick your Invocations carefullly - they will be what pull you out of the fire when you're in various situations that the rest of the party can't cover. As a Warlock 3, you'll have two least invocations.
VoP probably isn't going to be allowed, especially since, well, warlocks aren't really giving much up. Except for their UMD monkey role.

Picking I's is a pain since there are a few to choose from, but Fly and Baleful utterance.
Im not worried about what will be allowed becuase the Dm is a state Deliagte who allows every book other then book of erotic fantasy. So Point blank and the like wont be needed.

How useful is Dr?

---Rusty

Since you've got d6 HD, DR can help you a lot, not that you'll be getting much DR to start with, but, a point here, a point there, it adds up.
How are point blank and precise shot not going to be needed? You'll be shafting your ability to hit opponents who're in melee.
If all books are allowed - pull from Unearthed Arcana - gestalt, bloodlines(my favorite among UA options), etc.

Stat's are 18, 18, 13, 12, 12,12 that's 49 points. You meant four 12s right?

I'd arrange them thusly:
Str - 12
Con - 12
Dex - 18
Int - 12
Wis - 12
Cha - 18

Vop Gives a bonus sacrad strike on top of that its a touch attack. Im more worried about the DC of the spell, so I will look into the MM for meta and SLA Focus along with Nymph's Kiss for my bonus exalted feat, and maybe take two flaws for the prevois mentioned feats.
