But it is worse than neglecting your skills (and thus your Level Ups and Class Resources).
Yes! A thousand times yes!

In fact...

Goodberry: When foraging for food, as long as you do not roll a natural 1 doing so, you automatically find enough food for two medium creatures in addition to the normal result as long as there actually is food in the area. You may take this woodcraft ability multiple times. Each time you do, you fine enough food for an additional Medium creature automatically (maximum 10)

Take two and stop having to pretend you care about the DM's camping fixation!

Unless foraging for food is somehow interesting to spell caster players, good luck with that ever happening in a reallife game.
you are out of rations.

Ranger has a bad day with rolls or you are in very poor area.
Ranger gets only rations for 2 people in a 5 size party.
anyone who does not eat, gets an exhaustion level.

maybe now spellcasters can work with ranger to get more food?
Enhance ability? Guidance? for better rolls?
Fly or spider climb or water breathing to get into more areas to look for food?

Not just spell caster players. Despite my preference for a magic ranger, I am more likely to choose martial characters over full casters. And the idea of a foraging mini-game sounds utterly horrifying to me. I’m not interested in spending my limited game time rolling to find rabbits, or even just counting how many rations we have.

I make no claim to speak for the entire community, but I doubt that I am totally alone I that.

Foraging also covers ingredient, lumber, and fiber gathering (for potions, staves/wands, and robes, books, etc).

You reinvented Natural Explorer.

Still not interesting.

Sounds more like time to switch DMs.

To be fair, I also hate spell components, including for the same reason that I hate tracking arrows, torches, rations, and encumbrance.

When a player wants to create a magic item, I sometimes send them on a quest to acquire unusual ingredients. But they are never random. Most of the stuff, like wood or metal, or artisan equipment, they can purchase.

When I saw that Shadowdark has zero spell components − no material component, no costly component, no wand, no holy symbol − just cast the spell however you imagine casting it − it was like dense fog lifted off of me and I breathed fresh air for the first time.
