What was Alternity like?

I'm not at all familiar with Delta Green, and I have only a casual knowledge of CoC, so I can't give you comparisons.

I can say Dark Matter is a gorgeous book. Great art and production values.

Of all the Alt products, DM has probably been cannabalized the most for d20 material. There's a lot of DM in d20 Modern.

It's very much a sort of X-Files meets Men in Black setting, covering a wide variety of paranormal, aliens, horror and cultish stuff. You could run anything from a very dark conspiracy game to campy supermarket tabloid adventures. The Dark Matter Arms and Equipment Guide is a great tool for playing modern espionage games with Alternity rules.

It's hard to find too. I've scoured Amazon and Ebay but Dark Matter isn't available right now by itself, only in huge lots. I'm sure it will turn up eventually for fairly cheap.

And yeah, that sounds a lot like Delta Green. Which, incidentally, is supposed to be rereleased from Pagan Games as a BRP/d20 sourcebook.

Definitely one of the most popular of the Alt books.

It is available as a pdf now, but I believe that's from a scan which just wouldn't do the graphics justice.

Our group loved Alternity and we still bug our DM to run this again.
We had a lot of great memories with it. <sigh/> :D

Dark Matter, from what i've heard and read about it, sounds A LOT like Cthulhu and Delta Green. And since Monte Cooke worked on both, I wonder how similar they are. Is Dark Matter comparable to the d20 CoC book, as far as genre? What about graphic layout and design? d20 CoC IS a pretty book, only a lot of the combat feats were sort of a waste of space. I've had to change it around some with d20 Modern stuff to make it more fun.
I'm not familiar with d20 CoC, but Dark Matter is more conspiracy/modern scifi than horror. There are demons and similar things, but they're not what the setting focuses on. Though I suppose you could run CoC with Dark Matter... assuming you figured out something for Sanity.

Personally, I felt Dark*Matter was more reminiscent of Dark Conspiracy than CoC. Choosing between Delta Green and CoC, I'd say DM was much more like Delta Green. And yeah, I also see a lot of DM in d20 Modern.

I kow this is a bit of thread-necromancy. but this thread got me re-thinking of the StarDrive setting and I dug it out and re-read it.

It's really an incredible piece of work.
