The first thing I killed was a Merman.

I think the DM was running X1 Isle of Dread, and we were on the boat on the way there. I was a fighter when these mermen turned up with tridents. I decided to try and lasso one of the tridents. I was confused, I thought he meant trireme (my gazebo experience). I rolled a 20 and found myself holding this trident. I didnt know what to do with it, and was wondering how big these triremes were, so I threw the lasso at the merman and somehow we killed him.

Circa 1979--original boxed set. I believe the rulebook had a light blue cover...there was a dungeon included in it. I put down "other" because I am pretty confident my character's first kill was a giant rat. I'm sure my PC got a disease from its bite! Twenty-six years later, my characters still get the giant rat disease!

I actually think it was a hill giant, but it might have been an ogre, so I chose that. That was 1st edition. I was a drow acrobat, of all things.

I don't think we started at 1st. That was my first real character, I was in 10th grade, I think. I'd played red boxed (I was the thief) in 5th grade once, but I remember very little from that game, and I don't recall fighting anything.

Where is the option for rat? I've had two campaigns start at 1st level with encounters with regular or giant rats. But my first kill was a goblin.

Bah! What is this "Why"? Back in the days of Basic D&D, when I started, we never asked why!

Never asked how 20 orcs and an 80-ft. dragon fit in a 10-by-20 room, either. ;)

I've no earthly clue what the first monster I ever killed was, nor what my character class was. It's been 29 years! I do remember the first character that I ever created was a cleric, who was stung to death by giant bees. He was all alone, poor guy! I'd not really understood the idea of an adventuring party at that point, and after all, there was only me and my brother to play...

Later, when we got a real set of the rules, I rolled up a dwarf, and he and his mule had many adventures.

IIRC, the temple was abandoned by the original inhabitants, who were disciples of Vecna. The disciples were sent out to find the cataclysmic scroll, in hopes of flooding the world with evil. The kobolds basically took over the abandoned temple for their own nasty purposes. As such, there were more kobolds inside getting comfy in the temple. Therefore, the term "abandoned temple" refers to the original inhabitants no longer using the space for the purpose it was built. Hope that clears it up.

In short, our group of level ones didn't question why the kobolds were guarding a temple that clearly showed evidence of not belonging to them in the first place and had clearly fallen in disarray. Our mission was to find a clue as to the whereabouts and perhaps find who else was seeking this cataclysmic scroll. The blasted kobold got in the way. :)
