What was your favorite monster (from MM, FF, or MM2)

That's like asking which is my favorite child. (Not to imply my children are monsters.)

I really can't narrow it down to a single favorite. Although, I think the deathknight was the first that awed me. (The FF was the first AD&D book I ever saw.)

I don't ever remember him being a fungus??? Really?

No. At least not in my MM (printed in 1979). Unless "being a fungus" is some long forgotten AD&D term for "tough cookie". Or maybe it was changed from earlier printings.

For me, it's the Death Knight from the FF.

Sorry, I'm too out of the loop with WOTCs new monster manuals, so I didn't include them.
Pick 1 only...I know its hard.

Mine: The Troll. This guy just "was" AD&D to me. Intellegent, humanoid but also monsterous and almost magical (in its regeneration ability) and being a fungus! The image of the troll putting out string (in the DMG or PH?) to lure and trick the underground adventurers...that really summed up the game for me.

Alu Demon...as soon as we found scarabs of protection we went looking for Succubi.

Mindflayer. Just the description/image is cool -- although I think that may be coloured by a Fighting Fantasy bestiary with a similar creature. (Anyone know where I can get my hands on one? I gave mine away years ago.)

Close second to the beholder/gas spore. For a while, while I was out of the game, my mind conflated the beholder and the mindflayer -- and I'm still dedicated to one day springing such a hideous crossbreed on some unsuspecting players.

The tentamort. Awesome. Liquefy a character in two rounds. What could be better?

The slaadi and the death knight are pretty cool too, though.

Tough call. Limiting myself to the three sources mentioned (MM, FF, and MMII), it would be one of the slimes/puddings/oozes/jellies. If a gun were put to my head and I was forced to choose, I would probably choose...

OOOOooooo..... this is really a tough one. There were quite a few that I really loved. However, I think the whole Githyanki and Githzari thing really was pretty cool to me back in the day. Runners up would be Slaadi and modrons.
