What would an alternative to the Monk's Martial Arts ability

It was brought up in the discussion about the Ranger, but currently the Monk's Martial Arts ability is very much based on Two-Weapon Fighting. So if they were to get an alternate version of their Martial Arts ability (and possibly flurry of blows) what would it be like?

Would one be based off of Great-Weapon Fighting somehow? Is there even a need for a defensive style, given that Monks have pretty good defenses to begin with.

I guess if I was doing something based on GWF, I'd replace flurry of blows by increasing the monk's damage die, and give out +1d6 per ki point spent. Something like that to model the attacks hurting more.
