D&D (2024) What would change for you if Wizards started calling it 6E?

I blinked and then 5E came out.

That reminds me of being at GenCon last year with my friend, who has been playing exclusively PF1 since day one. Looking at a booth, he said "maybe I should take a look at this new edition of D&D."
I laughed. "It's been 8 years."

I would be greatly disappointed that they missed the golden opportunity to call it 5.1e (because One D&D, eh, eh).

I could clearly say "Hey, guys, we're gonna stick with 5e" and my group would know what game we were playing.

clarity. The ability to say where 1 set of rules end and the next begins. You look at a bird or talk with someone at a con and one is useing 1 set of rules the other is useing the other both calling it 5e is muddy

I would be super annoyed that WotC backed down to assuage a tiny minority of folks who can't seem to wrap their head around the rationale for getting rid of the old editions model, and I would be super bummed that they were sticking with even a watered-down version of that model. I would also be concerned about compatibility with all my stuff on DDB going forward, since it is all 5e, and WotC would have just demonstrated that they are likely to change strategies without warning.

When it actually came out, I would expect massive confusion and a natural jumping off point for a lot of people.

It would be a super dumb move. Which is why it ain't going to happen.

I think many of you fail to realize how deeply integrated DDB is to the game at this point. It is not just the future, it is the present of Dungeons and Dragons. WotC are not going to do anything to undermine that.

So they'll have to make a hard split between the editions, much as WotC tries to avoid doing just that. Likely you'll just pick which ruleset the character you're making will use, and it'll show you that subset.

That's not confusing at all. So much better than giving classes with different mechanics "in the same edition" different names.

It really isn't. I can go into my DDB account right now and search for an orc. The first result is the current version, but scrolling down further I find a few different orcs before finding another creature called "orc" from Volo's with the legacy tag. Mousing over the legacy tag, it says "this doesn't reflect the latest rules and lore" with a learn more link that points here. Sounds like the type of thing you'd approve of; they didn't alter the old listing and instead have a note saying a more recent version is available.

I imagine they'd do something similar with all the 2014 material that gets a 2024 refresh.
