If I've no choice but to fight, how else am I supposed to do it?Really? Would you try to grapple someone who is armed with a sword? Or a even just a dagger?

I would rather try to grapple someone with a sword than a dagger. But yes, trying to close range with someone armed and you having nothing should be real dangerous.Really? Would you try to grapple someone who is armed with a sword? Or a even just a dagger?
These are D&D characters - when do any of them ever have qualms about anything? My point was if no one had any qualms about grappling an armed opponent, then I would agree that the weapon wielder's advantage in the AD&D rules would be "too much."
No, it is a free attack when someone leaves any space within 5' of you, even if they aren't leaving your reach. You can prevent it by dropping your move speed to 5' (a "shift").4E: Free attack on those voluntarily leaving your reach if you can see them, 1/turn default.
The wizards (on both sides) will love it, as no front-liner in his-her right mind will want to burst through the line to get at the squishies.I think when my game gets up and running I'm going to try a variant.
Opportunity attacks are always hits, no need to roll anything but damage.
Would that allow for skills to act like saves for half damage, perhaps? Feinting, tumbling, etcI think when my game gets up and running I'm going to try a variant.

See how that works.
Nah, one of the points is to speed up off turn actions with less rolling.Would that allow for skills to act like saves for half damage, perhaps? Feinting, tumbling, etc
