I guess I'm part of the 'old guard'. I've been playing for about thirty years. I like 4E a lot. I haven't voted in the poll, though, because none of the choices are satisfactory.
I didn't like any of the voting options, they seemed to be written by someone who hates 4E and isn't trying to be objective.
Seriously. No sea elf, locathah, or merfolk. No sea hag, greenhag, or annis.
Dude!Really!
If anything, simply from the poll and the question, I'd think it sounds more like someone who likes 4E, and wants to know what it would take for 3E'rs and other edition players, to play 4E. But I highly doubt that's the case also. I expect that it was just based on curiosity, but I really don't see anything in the OP or the question/poll to ascribe such motives or make such assumptions.
The line "Nothing! It's perfect as-is" REEKS of sarcasm becaquse of the word "perfect".
Why does the "old guard" complain that a different edition is different? If you don't want variety, then don't seek it. Plain and simple.
You act as though once your particular preferred edition of D&D gets left behind so WotC can work on something else, that people will stop playing it. I've met far more people playing 3e and 2e than 4e players, so I think it's safe to say you'll be covered for a long time, no worries. We might be concerned that the new edition is different because eventually all the incoming gamers will consider the new edition the standard. And the version we like/prefer/whatever will slowly fade away into the sidelines.
If we have a lifetime group..then its not so bad. But if you move around a lot (military) its gets harder and harder. Pretty soon you are absorbed into the new standard, just like the borg...
It happens in all aspects of society...why not in gaming?
That still doesn't mean that the OP hates 4E. That's a response that a lot of people on here have expressed (whether that's a healthy expression or not). He simply put an option on a poll that says what a lot of people here have expressed, and he wanted to see how many people feel that way. How does that mean that the guy who made the poll must "hate 4E"? There's a leap in logic there that doesn't make sense.
