What would soften the blow?

For WOTC to come out and say your old books (3e/3.5 that is) are still good with no conversion necessary. Simply open them up and play. The new edition is just a re-vamp which you can use or not use, much like 3e > 3.5. Basically a 4e in name only.

Definitely if they dont' do what they did to Living Greyhawk in the 3.0 to 3.5 conversion. Then they said that since the builderbooks were going "out of print", and the complete books were replacing them, if you had a feat or prestige class that you were using from the builderbooks that was not reprinted in a complete book, you had to get rid of it (you could rebuild your character instead)

Wotc was always saying that unreprinted builder book stuff was still legit, and they were NOT going to reprint/fix all the builderbook stuff. But then for RPGA purposes, they said it wasn't legitimate. The two parts weren't communicating about the RPGA's needs. A web enhancement with the minor revisions needed for builder book content would have been easy to do, but was refused.

I'm ready for 4e now, so really no need to soften blows. What would be sweet though would be:

- An open beta test. Insane, I know, but it would be cool.
- Keeping the OGL and the d20 License
- Incorporating software support and having a well supported virtual tabletop

I like what they did last time: successive teasers on what's new and cool. Those, along with a document on the precurssor to ENWorld, let us start a proto-3E campaign in May or June before the books were released.

Simple: make it better enough that I don't much mind the expense and effort.

The basic reason I buy any new system is that it does things I like that I cannot do with other systems. So, if 4e does things I like that 3e does not, I'll consider it.

In addition, I have a campaign running. The players are not the sort to switch systems just for the sake of newness. So it has to be sufficiently neat not only for myself, but half a dozen others as well.

No oversimplification!

Sure, some streamlining of rules would be fine, but this should be supplemented by also adding new and exciting rules adding new potential to the game. :)

The calls for easier creation of line NPCs should be heeded through simplified NPC classes, but options for PCs and important NPCs should remain manifold and extensive. Some, indeed I dare say many of us, enjoy character creation and world creation as much as playing the game itself.

Yep. And retain the SRD.

Basically a 4e that I don't have to buy to keep playing. I really have no interest in a 4e at all, but I could at least live with that without becoming too embittered about the whole thing.

I won't be buying 4th ed anyway, but heres what would make me consider it.

1. Drop Eberron.
2. Drop the reliance on miniatures.
3. Keep the game mechanically compatible with 3.X.
4. Keep it in with the OGL, so anyone can publish for it.
5. Reduce the number of feats and new PrC's in each release. Theres just too many.

I don't get this at all. As long as Eberron's not the core setting--and as much as I like it, I don't think it should be--nobody's forcing you to use it. Why do you care? I'm not an FR fan, but I'm not bitter about WotC publishing it.

Its just me but I can see WotC turning Eberron into the default setting.
