... the lair of a young green dragon?

In my campaign, I have the PCs rushing off in search of an old elven artifact. Ages ago, the elves hid the artifact deep in the tunnels of an old cave as they fled the area. The cave is behind a small waterfall and a young green dragon has made it his home. However, a small shaft leads down into the tunnels, but the dragon has had no desire to check out what is down there (too busy sleeping on his treasure). So I would like my PCs to venture down into these caves....but what would they find? Oozes? Vermin? etc etc. The party consists of the following:

Human Cleric of Kelemvor 4 (bastard sword wielding, full plate wearing tank)
Wood Elf Ranger 4 (uber archer)
Human Fighter 4 (two weapon fighter)
Human Rogue 4 (gool ol rapier back-stabber)
Dwarven Fighter 4 (waraxe swinging maniac)

My thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Well, if its an all important elven artifact that needs protecting, then you should put in a really tough elven guardian.

I would have an elven lich (the non evil kind) to guard it.......not sure what level these pc's are though....

Well I indicated that they were 4th level....so a lich may be just a little too tough ;) However, a neutral or good lich who tests the PCs intelligence, will etc through puzzles etc may be neat.

I was looking for some suggestions on general cave ecology etc, what would have made the caverns its home...

Cheers,

Aside from a Green Dragon? well, you are looking for a sylvan cave dweller. In the MM look at terrain and look for forest and underground in the descriptor. But whatever it was, I think the green dragon might have eaten it. I like the idea of the good lich and puzzles. Its the most ecological, cinsidering the dragon.
