D&D 5E what would you play?

Hi all,

I'm making a new PC for an ongoing Age of Worms 5e game. We just hit 14th level.

I decided my last PC, a ranger/rogue loosely based on the demon hunter from Diablo III, wasn't as fun as I'd been hoping. For one thing, she was built for sneaking around unseen, but the monk seems to have the scout role stitched up, although to be fair, I think it's as much my own fault, as she has too many different things she can do with her bonus action and also extra damage coming from too many different sources - I was always forgetting one or the other.

The other PCs are:
1) Wood elf shadow monk
2) Human evoker wizard
3) Dragonborn moon druid
4) Hill dwarf tempest cleric

As the fifth member of the above party, what would you play?

I normally play roguish types, but I think I'd like to try something different this time. I've been thinking about a defenderish fey knight - an Ancients paladin with either some lore bard or GOO warlock levels mixed in. I'm open to other suggestions, though, as I've been having a lot of trouble making up my mind.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Either paladin or fighter would seem to be the obvious choice. You seem to have enough spellcasters, including two half-healers, but you could use a solid tank.
Cool. So maybe I'm on the right track then. The problem is that I'm not sure I'd enjoy a straight tank, which is why I was thinking of MCing into bard or warlock to get some more skills and stuff. Plus, the lore bard's Cutting Words ability is great for a defender. I just wish there was some way to get the bard's extra skills, Bardic Inspiration, and Cutting Words without having to get all the spells too.

You could go for the Eldritch Knight fighter option. That way you could play a tank with some arcane offensive spells.

I've considered it. I kind of like the look of the paladin better at the moment, though. Which do you reckon would be more useful - paladin or eldritch knight - given the party's current make-up?

I think there is enough to do with a 'straight tank' to keep you from getting bored. There are some fun things to do with each of the fighter builds. The current star of the game I am DMing is a straight fighter....

I've tried it before. Played a barbarian in 4e and got bored of it pretty quickly. I like to make characters that can contribute meaningfully both in and out of combat. I also like playing characters with lots of skills. Paladins can be charming and such, but they don't get many skills. That's partly why I was thinking of MCing into either lore bard (4 extra skills) or warlock (for the Beguiling Influence invocation).

Given that your party already has two divine magic casters, I'd go the fighter route. Then you can play the tank and maybe grab a couple of offensive and buff spells. Unless you want to be the charismatic face of the party. Your party already has 3 casters and one rogue/fighter. A tank or DPS fighter might be needed to improve the group's melee capabilities. With the fighter option, you can hold off the bad guys while the other members cast their spells. The eldritch knight allows you to join in the spellcasting fun.

I wouldn't mind it, but I'm not sure some of the other players in the group would let me - there's a doctor and two lawyers in the group, and they tend to be quite vocal about things, so it can be hard to get a word in edgewise at the table sometimes. :/

I'm in agreement with the others -- that Shepherd's Pie has plenty of spice, what it's missing is MEAT! :)

Eldritch knight would give you a bit of arcane, because it looks like you have the divine covered. Of course, the battlemaster fighter option would give you a "martial magic" flavor, too...
