Why does one have to choose one or the other? Why not enjoy both and use one or the other as would best suit your game. Obviously the name "RPG" suggests role-playing is critical, but one can approach it tactically, strategically and mathematically without cheapening the RP factor. Different games have different mathematical laws about them, many of which represent atmospheric elements (-especially- in White Wolf games), and the roles or classes in question (especially in the case of the Paladin). Game mechanics such as racial and class distinctions allow one to choose any number of ways to make the most of their character and how he interacts with the DM's setting. Game mechanics can often be as interesting as plot, story and feasibility, sometimes even more so, without negating the validity of either of those three. HP, levels and all that mean about as much to D&D as story elements, plots and settings. None more, and none less.
Edit: Saturnalia seems to have beaten me to calling Rem's Law on that post.
