Whatcha Reading? (In August)

I started reading the first Sherlock Holmes novel "A study in scarlet" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is a first for me since it's the first e-book I'm reading. I also downloaded all of the other Sherlock Holmes novels and story collections, except the 'Casebook' (because I couldn't find a free version).

What inspired me to read them was watching the new Sherlock Holmes show which started with a first episode titled "A study in pink".

In parallel I'm reading "The Sundered Eagle" a supplement for Ars Magica 5th ed, detailing the Theban Tribunal, i.e. the region of Greece and Asia Minor around 1220 AC.

What do you think of Jack McDevitt?
I think, I've read all of his novels. Imho, they're usually good but not great (although some get close). I've yet to be disappointed by him (which is unusual), so I'll definitely get every new novel he writes.

What new Sherlock Holmes show? You're not the first to mention this to me but I can't find it. I looked up Sherlock Holmes up on Direct TV but couldn't find a listing for any new show, just the movie. If ya don't mind, what is it called, and where and when does it appear. I'll definitely record it from what I've heard.

It is simply called "Sherlock", and is a BBC show/miniseries. The first batch was 3 episodes, and they did well enough that a second set of 3 episodes is also scheduled for later this year.

Very good stuff.

Currently reading The Serpent Queen by Sara Douglass. I had no idea it took place in the same world the Warfarer's Saga took place. After 6 books in that series and a definite ending, I expected to be starting something new.

Recently finished L.E. Modesitt Jr's anthology Viewpoint Critical.

Not sure what's next.

Sherlock Holmes is commissioned by his brother Mycroft to investigate the suspicious death of a government employee who was working on a top-secret defence project: the Bruce-Partington Project.[44] After apparently rejecting the case and handing it over to Watson, Holmes begins to be taunted by a sinister criminal who puts his victims into explosive vests and sets Holmes deadlines to solve apparently unrelated cases, including a twenty-year-old cold case involving the shoes of a drowned boy, the disappearance of a businessman, the death of a TV personality and the death of a guard of an art gallery at the hands of an assassin called the Golem. As Holmes solves the cases, he finds that they are all linked. After clearing up the case of the civil servant that Mycroft offered him, Holmes tries to force his unseen adversary to reveal himself. Nearing the end of the episode there is a standoff between Holmes and "Jim Moriarty", who reveals that he is responsible for the crimes. In the final seconds of the episode Sherlock Holmes points his gun at a bomb on the floor.

Good Lord that sounds fantastic. I've been working on a Batman script involving explosive vests.

I also like the way they've changed the case names, the emphasis on the cases, and the manner of modernizing the crimes.

(By the way I've often preferred Mycroft to Sherlock.)

Now that I know it is broadcast here in the States under Masterpiece Theatre I'll look it up. Thanks a lot.
