Current day, the new Primus has fully reestablished control, but has recalled virtually all Modrons back to Regulus and sealed the borders of that collection of gears (among the largest, and certainly the most important in Mechanus). What the Modrons are up to now is up for debate, but they're still around, despite their minimization for various reasons, intentional or circumstantial, during the earliest days of 3e.

Actually, the information for the Modrons was released as a free web enhancement by WotC a while back.

Still, WotC is trying to not use them and would like for people to forget about them in favor of Formians, like in the 3.x Monster Manuals, instead of using modrons as creatures of lawful-neutral, beings that are geometry and order incarnate, we get semi-malevolent enslaving ant-people. A minor planar race being played up as a major incarnation of pure law.
