What's On Your Comic Pull-List?

I started to read Iron Man again since Robin Laws took over the lead writing spot as of issue #65. Yes, that is Robin Laws the RPG writer and developer... :)

I collected, until the times of their cancellations, Starman, Sandman, and Sandman Mystery Theatre. If they were still around, I'd be reading them today.
Of course, they didn't get cancelled, but simply ended. This is the day and age of pre-planned limited series.

And I miss The Flash. I collected that thing from '88 or '89 until '01 or '02. The writing quaity just dropped off. I didn't enjoy reading it anymore, I just bought it out of habit.
For the first time in my comic book reading life, Flash is actually pretty good right now. Written by Geoff Johns.

Same thing happened with Spider-Man (at one point I got all the titles). The stories just got terrible. I luckily dropped it just before the horror known as the Clone Saga started.
And again, Amazing Spider-Man, written by B5 creator JMS, is simply fantastic. And if you don't mind rebooted continuity, so is Ultimate Spider-Man.

Just out of curiosity, why are a few of you close to dropping JLA? I've been a subscriber to it nearly since the series started, and haven't been majorly disappointed by it yet.

Due to budget cuts, not as much as I'd like...

* Avengers
* Dork Tower
* JLA
* JSA
* Knights of the Dinner Table
* New X-Men
* Ultimates
* anything with Dr. Doom (like the upcxoming 4-issue srtory arc in Fantastic Four)
* anything with Hellboy
* anything with Transformers (Armada, War Within, TPB's, etc.)

I did have Thunderbolts in my pull-box, 'till Marvel decided to re-boot the comic and turn it into some disturbing & poorly drawn rendition of Fight Club.

Chicagoland's comic shops really leave a lot to be desired, so I get all my comics sent to me by Flying Colors Comics, run by the inestimable Joe Field in Concord, CA. I have never met a nicer, and better-informed, shop owner.

I'll second this. Amazing Spider Man #50 was one of the best comics I have read all year. Funny and serious, with a cool fight. The Amazing Spider Man dealing with Spetember 11th (totally black cover) is framed on my wall.

Ultimate Spidey is really well done as well. This past issue was great not for the Venom fight, but because of the narration by Peter's dad. Although the Venom fight was good.

Astro City disappeared because Kurt Busiek has been sick. He was finally diagnosed with mercury poisoning.

That's what happened? Well, get well soon Kurt. I believe he is supposed to to the new Conan series as well, for Dark Horse (I think).

All in all, I think comics are at a high point as far as writing and art is concerned. Maybe not Best Ever, but there is lots of good stuff out there.

Plus a new Neil Gaiman Endless book (in hardcover, no less) is coming out this year.

I've been getting Powers in TPB. Ahh, Bone. Man, that has to be the funniest thing I read back when it first came out. I've been meaning to pick up the TPB's, myself. How is 'Rose', which I think is a spin-off series?

Rose is good, but it's a more serious book. Worth getting none the less.

Bone has turned into fantasy, which Jeff has said was the plan all along, so don't expect as much humor later on as in the early parts of the series.

Stupid, Stupid Rat Tales: the Adventures of Big Johnson Bone is very much in the spirit of the couple of years of BOne itself and is a can't miss.

All in all all three series are very good, just be aware they aren't all fun and hijinks.

You're right about Sandman, but I thought Starman ended due to both low sales and the writer wanting to move on. Well, either way, I doubt that any other writer would have been able to capture the feeling of the original (although, admittedly, the final story arc did drag in spots).

Sandman Mystery Theatre was definitely cancelled, though. They never really finished the last mystery (IIRC, someone was wearing a WWI uniform and murdering people). The final issue felt very rushed as they attempted to wrap everything up.
