What's so good about a Halberd - A Warden Question

It really depends on the DM and the type of monsters you're fighting. OAs can be fairly common in some types of fights. Skirmishers, while they usually have OA avoidance powers, can often trigger them fairly often. A lot of skirmishers for instance gain a good bit by ganging up, gnolls for example. These types may well be happy to take standard OAs if it lets them get 2-3 creatures on the same squishy target. Now if your defender is built to dish out punishing OAs all of a sudden these things are a lot less of a threat. The same can be said for a lot of flyby attacking skirmishers. You may not actually get to USE your OA very much, but denying the enemy use of his best tactics is gold.

In any case, super optimized OA builds are moderately uncommon. Its a situationally useful build option and just doing really nasty damage on every hit is both generally more useful and has some of the same effect. Still, if you can fit it in with other aspects of your build then it can be worth doing.

Note also that wardens CAN switch from using DEX/INT for AC to using CON or WIS. They don't HAVE to do so. This means if you did want to make a high DEX warden you simply stick with DEX as your AC boost stat. There are other reasons you probably don't want to do that, but I think a STR/DEX warden could probably work fairly well, you'd just lose out on a few minor riders. Probably not optimum but doable.

Well then this leads to a question. With so few AO's happening, why bother with Halberd Gamble, just boost Str and have a high hit and damage out put. Just go the Deadly Axe route and forget the Wis.

What is the math on the hit vs miss at level 11 once you take Polearm Gamble?

Say In one sinareo I through everything in Strength, In the other I go for Polearm Gamble and it gives me 2 extra attacks per encounter.

Based on an average monster, would I hit more with the higher strength or with the few extra attacks?

Actually, given that you always have to boost 2 different stats for the in-tier stat boosts, I can't see getting the requirements for getting polearm gamble hurting you in that regard. Rather, its a question of what stat you would have boosted instead - that's where it hurts you.

If stat boosts aren't enough to get you the stats you need, I guess it could hurt your strength - or, it could simply hurt another stat. Most likely it would simply cause the fighter not to boost their con as much as they might otherwise.

IMHO, in most fighter builds going/not going for polearm gamble doesn't hurt your to-hit - rather, it hurts something else.

Yeah, you just fall into the requirement likely by having reasonable stats. I suppose perhaps you might instead take 2 Con, thereby getting 2 hp, 1 surge (that you'll likely never use) and -1 Will.

You either need to Paragon multiclass into Barbarian or be a Half-Elf and choose that as your race power.
