Yeah, all the illustrations of them are funny. I suspect they were probably more inspired (somewhat) by the classic "Hoka!" series of stories.
But I'm sure someone would actually make them. In today's local newspaper, there was a story about how a local business selling custom teddy bears now does $300 million worth of business a year and gone from 1 store to 80-something. How much would real live teddy bears be worth? Especially if they could do house work. And eventually they'd probably evolve a bit and turn into drunken gun totters.
But you're right, the emphasis is more on action and such than is generally found in "hard" SF
