What's the deal with Bulldogs?

Not the kind that drools all over the couch. The D20 Si-fi book. The reviews I've seen all complain about it but then say the really like it. Anyone have it and want to share their thoughts?

Hmmm. I think I only complained about the supposed "coldness" of space in my review.

It's good. I haven't ran a straight Bulldogs! game, but I have borrowed bits from it. If you have any questions, ask.

Bulldogs! is great for what it sets out to do. It is more of a tongue-in-cheek sci-fi with no real pretense of hard science. There are gun-toting teddy bears, inter alia. If the premise sounds good to you, I think you'll find it to your liking. It has a ton gear in it. One caveat: It uses the base d20 system, i.e., not d20 Modern and/or d20 Future.

You can get it at Indie Press Revolution with free shipping in the U.S. And, yes, I am ostensibly a competitor of Brennan's, but our takes on d20 sci-fi are so different that I don't have a problem recommending it.

Agreed. You just have to see the illo on p. 144 to get my point. It's a gun-toting teddy bear with a cigarette hangin' off his lip and a foaming mug of beer in the off hand.

Yeah, all the illustrations of them are funny. I suspect they were probably more inspired (somewhat) by the classic "Hoka!" series of stories.

But I'm sure someone would actually make them. In today's local newspaper, there was a story about how a local business selling custom teddy bears now does $300 million worth of business a year and gone from 1 store to 80-something. How much would real live teddy bears be worth? Especially if they could do house work. And eventually they'd probably evolve a bit and turn into drunken gun totters.

But you're right, the emphasis is more on action and such than is generally found in "hard" SF
