D&D General What's the safest place to live in the Forgotten Realms?

Also keep in mind that time heals all wounds (and perceived threats). I live in the Netherlands and have never felt threatened by Germany, having been born 30+ years after WW2. I suspect that if relations are good after a few decades between nations, there is a lot less to worry about in most people's minds...

Stuff like a Spellplague... Yeah, can't plan for that!

Places like Evermeet, Unicorn domain, Langdarma, etc. are just not viable for an 'average' (human) adventuring couple.

I would consider something like Thay more if it had more rule of law and less powerful Red Wizards that could enslave your children on a whim. Where the living are less valued then the dead, rampant slavery, oppression, etc. I just did not get a 'safe place' vibe from Thay at all after reading the wiki... Menzoberranzan is just worse on every front, unless the couple are evil Dark elves and unless your children are all female, you're in for some trouble...

Silverymoon => War of the Silver Marches
Cormyr => war with Netheril
Dalelands => war with Sembia
Turmish => famine

East of the Forgotten Realms and places like Sespech or Maztica, Zakhara (Al-Quadim), and Kara-Tur just haven't been (much) written about in a long time... So no news, doesn't mean good news. The same goes for the Rock of Bral...

They’re all pretty safe places to live unless you’re in Thay or somewhere extreme like Chult or Icewind Dale, it seems. 🤷‍♂️

Apparently you can, if your government is a council of archmages lead by a divination specialist. The Halruaan Elders saw the Spellplague in advance and planned for it by transporting their entire kingdom to another, safer plane of existence. That's Time-Lord-level awesomeness, which is why my pick is Halruaa.

I mean, I imagine that being somewhere the current developers don't want to detail seems vaguely nice until, you know, that reluctance to deal with you results in your whole continent getting swapped to another planet, and then, when the editions next change, swapped back (not even because anybody particularly wants you, but as part of the general "undo"). Sure, canon hasn't detailed what that planet-swapping actually did to Maztica, but it probably wasn't comfortable.

With that said, Huzuz, the "City of Delights", cosmopolitan capital city of Zakhara, seems like a pretty decent choice from a mixture of canon local stability and reluctance of any writers to touch it since the sub-line ended.

Mosstone.

It's a quaint walled town known known for its hospitality. Plus, it's guarded by a huge clan of druids who have no problem making troublemakers feel unhappy.

That aside, in a world overrun with monsters and evil spellcasters, "safe" is super-subjective.

Suzail, Cormyr.

Why?

When it comes to hostilities, Cormyr wins. 😎

That, and most any attempt at taking Suzail usually means fighting a land war through Cormyr first.
