What's the ultimate Dwarf ride?

No innuendo meant, but what is the ultimate dwarf ride?

They've got to ride something what with those short stumpy legs, and, lacking the Hackmaster Dwarven War Pony, there just doesn't seem to be an option that suits their semi-subterranean lifestyle.

There's a riding lizard listed at the back of Forgotten Realms, but no notation on whether Dwarfs can ride it.

I always wanted Dwarfs to domesticate a wolverine subspecies and breed darkvision into 'em and then harness them to nimble chariots. That'd show them driders what for.

My dwarfen druid may just attempt it.

Dwarvies depend on themselves not others to carry thier loads, not even animals.

Now some say they use donkeys because that is the only animal as hard headed as a dwarf!

I like this thought, it means that the ants can take a load and find their own way back to the nest.

My LG dwarf rides a mule into battle. I even bought it barding.

Nothing quite so inspiring as a dwarven fighter charging into battle on his war mule (well, normal mule but I get some creative license), heavy lance leveled at his foe.

Also if the critter does get whacked its only 8 gp to replace. Compare that to a 450 gp heavy warhorse.

Actually, they are called Bighorn Sheep - but the point still stands - they make great mounts for mountainous terrain. Personally, I would give them +5 to Balance and Climb (but only in mountains)

I hate to be pedantic (okay, perhaps I secretly revel in it! bwahaha!) ahem, yes.. anyhow, the Rocky Mountain ram is indeed a breed of bighorn sheep, but there are lots of different sorts of bighorns, some of which are endangered. See the Bighorn Institute for more information if you're interested. They're cool animals.

Ahem, to return to the topic.. yeah, you're right about their use underground.. I'm not sure what I'd recommend for an underground mount. I think the duergar have the right idea with those giant spiders they ride, but that schtick's taken.

My campaign's dwarves don't live underground anyhow, they have fortress-like settlements near mines in the mountains. Very similar to regular old dwarves, but primarily surface-dwelling.

Giant Ants...

On the world Dragongirl and I are working on we have dwarves using the giant ants she mentioned.

Primarily used as a beast of burden they also use the larvae as a food source, and turn the exoskeletons into lightweight breastplates for cheap armor. They are also used to power the paddlewheels on their sailing ships...but that is another story.
