What's this about a plagiarized map in Conan: City of Shadizar?

If you guys are done, we can get back to the topic on hand.

Other mongoose books that have been real good are the Book of. I've only seen Book of planes and book ofstronholds but both were good quality works. Book of planes has some great ideas and simpole mechancis that really add a lot. I was impressed with that one.

Agreed. I really enjoy the Book of... that I bought.

I loved the mechanics introduced in the Book of Dragons for different specialties (Normal, Combat, Learned, CHarismatic, Arcane, Swift, Mystical, Tough and Devastating) as an alternate to their standard progressions.

The Book of the Immortal reminds me greatly of the labours of Hercules or the OD&D immortal rules with new variants. Basically it allows for the development of "Hero God" type character in parallel to normal level progressions.

It was the Book of the Planes that first hooked me on the series. The Infernum plane was later expanded into the stand alone Book of Hell (By Adrian Bott). Which has spawned a whole OGL game (currently in development by Gareth Hanrahan) where we've been promised the opportunity to play demons or fallen angels who can grasp at the reign of power while torturing the damned for fun.

Infernum is definitely on my 2005 must have list.

Book of the Immortal I'd really like to pick up, and the others I'm hoping to find for a discount. I got strongholds for a discount so with luck it will happen again.

They are all available at DTRPG in watermarked form. I'm hoping to pick Strongholds and Dynasties there when I get some extra cash.

I rather liked Book of the Sea, but then I bought it to go with World Works Games The Maiden of the High Seas so the pair form a rosy warm glow in my thoughts.

Strongholds & Dynasties is also interesting, though the only part I've used is the revised Open Mass Combat system. (Which is very nice.) The combat syestems are compatible between the two, so you can have a ship laying siege to a town, or a fortified harbor holding off an attack very easily. In combination with decent terrain it can be quite an event.

Well you certainly can't *debate* with him. Next he'll say those who disagree with him have moral issues, cheat on their wives and rob liquor stores.

*gasp* They...they...don't?!?

Seriously, though, I've been in Arkham's shoes for a long, long time. I've felt burned by Mongoose products in the past, and even vowed (after I bought B5's core book) to never purchase Mongoose again.

Then I went an bought the original, core Conan book. Whooops. That just sealed the deal for me.

Now that I've read this thread, I have to admit a certain shift in my feelings. I'd like to like the Jeremiah core book since I enjoy the show. I'd love to buy the other Conan suppliments (despite being a bit high-priced). I'm just wary of the slipshod editing and oft-kooky grammatical structures I've seen in Mongoose's previous products.

But people change, as do companies, and we all deserve a second chance. It sounds (from Mongoose Matt's post above) that they not only acknowledge their (rather large) mistakes regarding editing but are genuinely interested in correcting them, especially after the first run of the Conan core book.

Unlike Arkham, I will look at the Jeremiah core book in my local RPG store, and I'll flip through the Conan suppliments. If I still see the same ol' crap, then Mongoose has lost a customer for good. If the writing and editing is better....well, make room for me on the wagon, you know?

Arkham618, what would you like to have seen in Conan the Roleplaying Game that would have made a more positive difference (other than grammar/spelling corrections)? Can you give a clearer, more specific example as to why you feel GURPs Conan is better than Conan the Roleplaying Game?

You know, I do appreciate that, through all the insults and side-tracking, I-Master has consistantly (and exceptionally politely) asked for clarification on this, without lowering himself to finger-pointing an one-upsmanship. .....And has not received an answer.

Despite empathizing with him regarding his opinion of Mongoose, I have to say that the absence of a reply to I-Master's inquiry says a lot about Arkham.

In that light, I-Master, do you really even want to read his response? Personally, I don't.

Wait a few weeks to a month after the book has come out. Read threads and reviews on the books to see if other notice and comment on bad editing in the books. RPGs have exploeded on the net and there are no shortage of people willing to tell you if a book is good or bad. :D

Which kills me. I’m an English grad student who can’t find an editing job ANYWHERE… And yet gamers are -always- complaining about small grammatical errors in their games? *Sigh*
