Uhm ... yeah, right. Give him a choice. Oddly enough, I like to keep control of my own NPCs in my own game.

I believe you misread the post. He was saying that the NPC had a choice, not that the PC got to make the choice.

On thing to note, as soon as the weight of all the grabbled characters exceeds the wizards max load, he or she can only stagger around (5'/round) Any more than double max load, he/she cannot move at all.

As for how much weight is necessary to pull the character off the ceiling, take the necessary strength to pull the caster off the ceiling. As soon as the load exceeds double the max load of one less than that strength, the character comes off the wall. For example, in your case, a strength of 25 would pull the character off the ceiling. With a 24 strength, someone could stagger around with up to 1400lbs. As soon as you hit 1401lbs, that would require a 25 Str, and the character would come off the ceiling.

You could rule that any weight more than double the caster's max load would inflict subdual or even regular damage each round. If you have a 20th level caster with a 10 Str, it is clear that hanging a 12800lb weight from that character's waist would simply tear him/her in half instantly. Gotta love D&D math. But in that case, a 20th level party could use the wizard as the anchor point for a pendulum to swing a 6-ton statue across a chasm or something else of equal ridiculousness.

At what point would the ceiling collapse under the weight of the people clinging to it?

Heh. Good point. It was a cave ceiling in our case though, so one of the people involved would have been ripped apart before the ceiling actually came down. Gives a whole new meaning to the term "the weakest link". :)

Exactly. And in my book, that's not a "choice" at all, but my decision as the GM.

Anyway, thanks for all the ideas, guys. You're being very creative here trying to develop a workaround.
I'd still prefer to have a clean solution, but apparently there is none.

Hmmmmm - do you have any NPCs whose actions AREN'T the GM's decision? Get a grip. AuraSeer gives you some good advice and you get all sarcastic with him because he said the NPC could "choose" to break the hold or just hang on. Of course it's the GM's decision just like it's the GM's decision on what spell the evil wizard casts, who the monster attacks, etc so don't flip out on AuraSeer for putting some thought into your problem and giving you a mechanism for the future.

I think we get the point, Icebear and Stalkingblue. :)

Still, the image of spider-man under football tackle by a four-man team is just too fun to pass up...

Sorry Henry - I just don't like seeing people mocking someone else who was just trying to be helpful first thing in the morning :)

I apologize.

Rereading AuraSeer's post, I don't see what I thought I saw then. I guess I'd had a few too many people in RL that day being patronising instead of listening properly. I'm not used to that anymore.

Bad day. No reason to take it out on you.
Sorry, AuraSeer. Sorry, IceBear.

And thanks again for all the replies.

It's ok Stalkingblue - I made the mistake of assuming that you were something you were not - a new member with a bad attitude :) Anyway, I can see that you're just human and like me can somethings let the real world affect their posts in this forum.'

Anyway, sorry for the rough introduction to me :) Hopefully, we can be friends :)
