What's Your Dream Project?

Heck, a lot of that work has been done for you. Just find the original source stories (before Andersen & the Grimm Brothers if you can). Before the Victorians decided to clean them up, "fairy tales" were dark and even corrupt.

Actually I had planned on doing that. The originals are great source material. Consider it a reverse inspiration.

As a side note though, I often find that Disney , especially the older productions, strikes a chord somewhere inside me that just isn't right. Some of his stuff makes me fell creeped out.

And I don't mean that it a Black-t-shirt-wearing-I'm-too-cool-for-cartoons way.

It's a 1/2 inch thick piece of glass! It holds all programs that a GM could ever want, doubles as a game mat, and loves you as a person!

(spoof on another thread, btw)

Actually, this would be awesome, but would have to incorperate tech found only in Minority Report. A 3' by 2' piece of see-through plastic with touch sensors, light pens, optic keyboards, and all that cool stuff that probably won't exist for another 50 years.

Makes sense. Walt was and antisemite, dirty old man, and a bigott.

I wqould actually Finish and publish my homebrew system. Its finished for me to run and play but not near enough for public consumption.

I would also finish my Gamma world D20 conversion. Ther whole thing.

And if you have one shred of proof for those claims, I'd love to see them.

Some of the Disney animated films are masterpieces of cinema. Some are utter crap.

Anyway, staying on topic -- my dream project?

CityBook Online

If anyone else recalls the Citybook supplements, maybe you know what I'm thinking of. Instead of buying a $30 book with 5 locations you'll use and 15 you won't, why not allow consumers to assemble their own books out of online listings? "I'll take these two taverns, those shops, the graveyard and this marketplace." You figure out how much money you need to be charging per order and ask buyers to select at least enough individual elements that you can justify charging a price that will cover your per-order expenses. Sell as PDFs or Print-On-Demand. Figure out the most popular collections and put them on bookshelves.

Sometimes I think I'm crazy. Is this not a really really good idea? Or is it just me?

rifts d20. i want it so bad. i love the world but hate the system. i would buy every book in the series. damn K.S.'s ego!

dragonlance d20, i will not be happy with anybody elses version of krynn shortly after the war of the lance. i just will not, it's not in me.

My dream would be a system where I could take pieces of any purchased product and integrate it into my own campaign, with any needed changes, in a quick and seamless manner. Such a system would have to recognize documents; edit, cut, and paste sections as described by the DM; and use intelligent generators for virtually any type of detail. In effect, a super-AI to fill in the details of my general ideas. Then it would need to be able to handle all details during gaming, so I (as DM) could concentrate on the story and not have to worry about a particular modifier or how long a spell lasts. And it would have to do all that based solely on the descriptions it "hears" from the DM and the players.

Of course, this would take hundreds of thousands of man-hours to program and require star trek levels of technology, but you did use the word "dream"...

Ooooh, there are more than one thing I would start simultaneously.

1) The Ultimate Dungeon Master Computer Aid. Includes all major published material for d20. Add-ons for other systems available. Among the variety of features, it would include the Ultimate NPC Generator, which is a program which you can control via command-line with an SQL-style syntax (or with a front-end). Think entering something like "GENERATE 5 NPCS WHERE race='ogre' AND 0<=level<=3 AND (class='barbarian' OR class='fighter')" and *poof* you get 5 full statted ogres, some with class levels, preselected feats and skills which you can still modify with a few mouse clicks, pregenerated inventory, description, and all you have to do is place them on the electronic battle map. Yay! If you aren't as geeky as me, you can use a handy dialog box.

Hey, you said unlimited resources? Invent something that generates a 3D picture of the battle scene, and something else that generates randomized backgrounds for NPCs.
Can you tell I'm lazy?

The program should be designed by the world's leading experts in software engineering and usability so that it automatizes everything that can conceivably be automatized and can be learnt in a few hours.

2) Dominia d20. Calling it Magic d20 makes people feel ill, but I still would love it.

3) THE D&D massive multiplayer game, applying all 3e rules as they are (there's some overlapping with project #1, which will be used to shorten development times). And since we've got unlimited funds, hire all the world's greatest experts on language processing, neural networking, artificial intelligence, and produce something that detects and eliminates PKs and idiots in general. For example, saying "l33t" should result in your head mysteriously exploding, and going around killing random people should result in a computer-controlled good-aligned adventuring party of twice your level coming after you within half an hour.

4) The Ultimate Dungeon Master Aid Hardware, running #1. Giant hi-res screen, 5.1 sound, smaller displays for each player, all controlled by the master's terminal. Broadband internet connection to other such hardware to play with friends in teleconferencing mode, and to download fan-made addons. The master's terminal has a 25'' flat touchscreen. Enough processing power and RAM to run everything smooth. Everything is connected on wireless. Runs linux.

For the realistic part:

All the class splat books in one hardbound volume.
All the other splat books in one hardbound volume.
Include Monsters of Faerun and Magic of Faerun together.

For the unrealistic part:
Dream Park, or some variant thereof. Imagine: 'Professional Gamer' as a real profession enjoying the same acclaim that film celebrities get in our world today. DM's as acclaimed as directors. Heaven :)
