What's your favorite PHB spell?

I must add Teleport to the list. When my sorcerer got teleport he truly began to feel powerful to me. The ability to just vanish, and show up hundreds of miles away, in some safe haven, changes the game. I dreaded it for this reason at first, but I have come to enjoy it.

I'm a huge fan of the silent image line of spells, due to the fact that they let me use my creative & deranged mind. One of my favorite thing to do in the party is to use my illusions so the party can have some combat practice, and practical jokes.

edit --- Oops, sorry. Those were guesses as to what'd be next, not my faves. My actual favourite PHB spell though? . . . Polymorph, I guess. Tough call. . .

Charm person.

It lets a wizard become good at interrogations and info gathering and leads to interesting roleplay. At least that's how my eldritch knight wizard has used it.

My favorite arcane spell, hmm, it's been ages since I played an arcane spell caster, but I will take a stab at it. For low level I would have to say mage hand is one of my personal favorites. I have found players come up with some pretty darn creative ways of using this spell.

Other than phantasmal force (is that still in 3.5?) I would have to say it is my most used arcane spell. Well, maybe magic missile or its sibling arcane bolt (from the WotC website spellbook) get more use, but none more creatively.

Rope Trick is always nice to hide from badguys or get out of the elements, depending on the PC's level of course

Entangle was the one surprise spell for me. It stopped 2/3 of an orc skirmish against a small village we were defending. I did not really know what to do against all those orcs that were running against our group so I just tried entangle. Here is a pic I made for our campaign log back then, we were around level 4-5 at that time in a 2e game:

The 7 orcs attacking from the right side (6 normal orcs and a leader) were stopped dead with entangle the second round of the fight. I (dwarven cleric) then yelled over to Yasira (our thief/magic user) to cast grease on the bridge to somehow slow down the 7 orcs on coming from the other side of the river. Additionally I cast my last entangle the next round just at the end of the bridge to hold off those that would save against the grease spell. I then used my remaining spell slots for heat metal and heal light wounds. with the 12+ orcs stopped in their advance movement Arangar the fighter moved away from the right front and tried to slip through the woods to make a surprise attack against the flank of the the left front attack force of the orcs. Meanwhile Ronald took out orcs with his bow one by one (he rolled his dice like a god that evening) and Yasira did spend her remaining spell points for magic missiles and Melfs Acid arrow, the rest she finished with either her sword (if they came through) or with her bow.

In the end two orcs from the top attack group were left fleeing the battlefield and 2 orcs from the left attack front were running away as well (missed morale check). The rest was properly dealt with The bad thing was that the village was almost totally burned down by the fire arrows from the orcs, but at least we were able to save ourselves....thanks to the gods that at least the inn was not harmed by the fire
